Copycat moves will be a sure thing until the rules change... which doesn't bode well no matter what... replay booths are already overworked and underpaid (and manned by drooling boobs)... now somebody (who, some kind of a body language expert?) is going to have to "interpret intentions" too... in the meanwhile, I support the notion that trickery sometimes earns painful consequences.

Maybe Pickett can get away with faking slides in the pros too. Word is he's "unsure" about playing in the Peach Bowl.

When Mahomes signed his $500,000,000 deal, the landscape changed. With that kind of dollar value placed on a single player, the football world suddenly woke up to the value of a quarterback.

How does a DT make a tackle and keep his "weight" off the guy he's tackling??

Glad it was banned.

it was technically Legal, but it was bush league to exploit a specific safety rule.

There was nothing "cool" or "baller" about it.

If he gets blown up a few times in his bowl game, the officials might look the other way this one time...just for some Karma.

Let him understand why safety rules exist in the first place.

Sure to be an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty next year.
I thought it was great. The first time I saw it was Joe Montana in the 49ers playoff game against the Giants in 1984. He ran and faked going out of bounds. When the Giants players slowed down he took off down the sidelines for an additional 25 yards but the Giants defense clobbered him on the play once they caught up.

Shit like this happens all the time. Guys running towards the sideline then the D lets up and they turn it upfield. Happens like every other game. This is just a different variation . How will you even be able to discern a "fake slide" from a stutter step etc? Giving officials more power on judgement calls isnt going to work out well i can promise you that

Didn’t break any rules…
yep.

I have no dog in this fight. not a pitt fan, don't give a squat about this QB. but the fact is, all he did was drag his toe a little. He wasn't close to a "slide" at all. get over it.

...fact is:

“It was intentional,” Pickett said. “I just kind of started slowing down and pulling up and getting ready to slide and I just kind of saw their body language and they just pulled up as well. … I have never done that before. I just kind of kept going after I initially started to slide.”

Yeah, I mean he saw an opportunity to continue to run and took it. I don’t fault him for that instant decision, but it does violate the spirit of the original rule.

I mean if QBs are allowed to “fake slide” then how can you tell a defender that it is illegal to hit/tackle them? How are they supposed to know if the QB is really giving himself up?

NCAA did the right thing here.

Brady did that to Urlacher several years ago and ended up being the difference in the game. I wish the nfl had done something about it then.

If you aren’t trying to find an exploit in the rules, you aren’t competing at the top level. I don’t blame Pickett for the play.

But it is a clear exploit of a rule intended to keep players (QBs) safe, and NOT closing this exploit would be bad for both safety and competitiveness.

I can’t believe I am about to say this, but…

Well done, NCAA. You acted properly here.
