Are you guys happy to be getting a new arena despite losing the Mellon?

I am... They could do so much with the area that Mellon currently occupies. Pittsburgh is moving in the right direction, new development is a good thing. I am in favor of keeping the "arm" of Mellon standing though.

Alright, I was just thinking about how knocking the Spectrum down is a shame for Flyers (And Sixers fan I guess) and didn't know how you guys felt.

There are a lot of good memories there, but knocking it down won't make those go away. Three Rivers Stadium was pretty traumatic. This would be easier.

Having been to a game at the Igloo and not having any emotional ties to it (though I was with a Penguins fan and was cheering for them that game) it is my opinion that it was far past time to get a new arena. The Igloo was kind of a hole.

But I understand how emotions play into it. I wasn't upset to see Memorial Stadium be replaced but I know a lot of people who were.

You know...a big part of me wants to see it stand, but there's seriously nothing that could be done that would make it worth it to keep the Mellon standing. They've come up with many ideas, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's old. It's space that will be needed for parking, and apparently the Pens want to build a new training facility closer to the city, so the space is just too important.

I guess it's tough to do anything distinctive with a hockey arena, bit it's a shame that except for the LCD signs, there's no easy way to tell which arena is which. No distinctive character. I like the fact that Baseball moved away from cookie cutter stadiums. Just kind of wish that hockey could do it too.

The new arenas are light years ahead of some of the old Barns though. Going to the Capital Center, Old Boston Garden or the Spectrum was quite an experience, but those arenas, by comparison, sucked.

I miss Memorial Stadium, but more for the memories of going to Bullpen Parties and what not. That place was a dump. Shame the city couldn't have done more with it though. Bring some business to the area. Is it still an empty field or did they actually build something there?

Honestly it looks like any other arena out there. You can't even tell it looks brand new. JMO.

Outside of Atlanta and Minnesota, do any cities with new arenas really have any real distinguishing characteristics?

I agree actually. It's nice, but nothing that hasn't been done before. It's just now Pittsburgh has an arena on par with most other NHL teams, which is a good thing.

I would be really sad if the Sharks moved away from the Tank

EDIT: Now if they became the San Francisco Sharks so I didn't have to drive for an hour and a half to see a game I wouldn't mind that :)

It looks exactly like every other new NHL arena. The one thing I think the NHL could learn from the MLB is that making each teams arena different definately adds a cool element to the games and even makes some people want to visit the city to take in a game. My roommate for example is attempting to check out every MLB park by next year(he started in 2008).

*and before anyone asks the banners hanging from the rafters are not the unique touch I'm suggesting.
