Peter Magowan dies

Only 76.

On Wednesday, the Giants announced that Magowan would become the first non-player to receive a plaque on the club's Wall of Fame, which adorns Oracle Park near Second and King streets. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9, immediately before the team's annual FanFest.

So in 2005, I ran into Peter at an opera event. I walked right up to him and thanked him profusely for saving the Giants for SF. He then proceeded to discuss the merits of Chris Spier and Tito Fuentes with me for a solid 15 minutes. The man was amazing in many respect, but none surpassed his genuine obsession and love for the Giants.

His memory is truly a blessing.
