Some interesting comments from Jay Gruden in Peter Kings Monday morning QB.

Jay Gruden, Washington: Getting the most out of Robert Griffin III.

For the St. Louis Rams, the 2012 trade of the second pick in the draft—which Washington used to select Griffin—is the gift that keeps on giving. Four starting Rams have come from the deal, and there’s still the second pick in the draft this year remaining. For Griffin, who never formed the bond there should have been with coaches Mike and Kyle Shanahan, the Gruden addition is vital. Gruden will be judged by wins and losses, to be sure, but also by whether he can coach and teach Griffin into becoming the franchise quarterback he was drafted to be.

“I worked with Andy Dalton for three years in Cincinnati, and built a foundation of concepts and protections that I think worked well with him,” Gruden said. “With Robert, we’ll obviously use his skill set differently. When it comes to the quarterback position, my job is to make him comfortable and productive. I’m not going to try to turn RG3 into Andy Dalton or Drew Brees. He isn’t them. They’re not him. I would be foolish to try to turn RG3 into a pocket passer. It would be foolish. The way he is as a runner, we have to take advantage of that. He strikes fear into defensive coordinators when he runs outside. I’m going to let him be himself.”

It sounds good. But Griffin, as himself, averaged 132 rushes per year in his four Baylor seasons. He ran it 120 times as an NFL rookie in 2012, when he was the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’ll be 24 when next season starts, and has already had two ACL surgeries. Do you really want Griffin to “be himself” if that self wants to get out of the pocket and run so much? I understand Gruden, but I also would want to limit my young franchise quarterback’s exposure to danger in the open field—unless he was committed to sliding at the first sign of trouble, which Griffin hasn’t shown a willingness to do consistently.

I think the other part to this that will be the elephant in the room is that Griffin says he wants to be a pocket passer. So even if Gruden plans to run an offense that takes advantage of what Griffin does best, is he willing to keep doing those things? This is going to be interesting to say the least.

Big time interesting.

Never thought I would see Dalton running option plays, however it appears that Gruden simply wants to say all the right things, is happy to be here and has something to prove as well.

So Gruden wants to do exactly what the Shanahans did? He flat out stated that RG3 is not a pocket passer but RG3 has stated he wants to be one.

RG3 needs to put pride aside and realize what he does extremely well and how that opens up and disguises holes in his game.

I'm happy to hear this. Let's face it, Robert's threat is his ability to kill you multiple ways. Gruden is right, he isn't Brees or luck or dalton. We need to take advantage of his unique capabilities , even if it means risking him. He needs to learn to protect himself, much like Kaepernick and Wilson do. If he can, he will be fine.

I think this is the influence of his father who has publicly stated that no running qb is in the HOF. That is what his dad is concerned with. Not what's best for the Redskins.

Yeah I've never seen a guy purposely try to draw sideline hits(penalty) on his way out of bounds. OR try to truck DBs bigger than him. NOT smart!

So will it be Griffin vs Gruden?! Seems like Gruden is saying that Griffin III isn't a pocket passer and wants to use him the same way as the Shanahan's, but Griffin III wants to be a pocket passer..this is going to be interesting to say the least.

Absolutely. It is like Madden said a few months ago. Much like Kaep - RG3 should run all out if he sees a clear path to the end zone. Otherwise - either run out of bounds or slide - period (unless it is a very unique situation like a playoff winning play).

Time to just see if RG3 learns & if Gruden can assist him. No sense in continually bringing up the past, the Shanahans, etc. That is old news. They are no longer with the Skins & no longer of concern to me & others.

Griffin III will have to be more smarter and start sliding and getting out of bounds when need to instead of taking unessary hits, do I think Jay a Gruden should use Griffin III to his strengths? Yes! Will we see Griffin III with that brace on again next year?

I think what gruden's is saying is that Griffin is not exclusively a pocket passer, but he is much more. Griffin is going to have to accept this. Any coach of his is going to want to take advantage of his running capabilities. That just makes sense.

Good pt. That brace limits him just enough to take away his advantage when not in the pocket. Lots of questions that will be answered next season.

well gruden will be fired by preseason since Rg3 and Rg2 have an in with the owner :laugh3:

look i see no issue with Rg3 saying he wants to be more of a pocket passer . what does that imply ? it implies he needs work on reading defenses

i have no issue with gruden saying he isnt dalton or brees he should take advantage of the mobility Rg3 offers

this is really a non issue

I hope so dad. I'm beginning to think we, as skins fans, are conditioned like Pavlovs dogs, to always looking for underlying messages in everything said, because of the BS continuously flying in DC. Jay may just be up front and a blessed breath of fresh air. It'd be a nice change up.

I agree that this doesnt seem like an issue. Fact is that RG3 isnt brees. To not have his mobility as a factor in your offense would be foolish. But that doesnt mean that well be running triple option plays and never teaching him to read a defense.

First off let me say this.......

Peter King is a FU**king Putz.....it is aparent he has an agenda when it comes to the Skins...We already know that he is mightier then thou with his no longer using the redskins, but Washington Football team....The skins should be like.....Yeah...Peter good to see you here at Skins trainging camp...now turn your fatass around and walk the F**K out...you dont refer to us by our name....you are with the samll crwod trying to get us to change our name....well go talk with them to get your Redskins info...... Ok rant over

I dont think this is an issue....I see it as Jay saying.....Look we have a guy that can throw for sure, but he has a weapon in his legs as well...It is stupid not to use that weapon......He will be calling more bootlegs.....rolling the pocket.....get him outside the pocket.......give him more time.....things like that.....Ya Know...stuff we were screaming for last year that Shanny wasnt calling...even though the bootlegs and moving the QB around are staples to his offense.....

If you can't see these statements as an issue, then you aren't thinking logically.

RG3 demanded he wanted to be a pocket passer. RG3 had the ability to keep Shanahan.

If RG3 continues to demand to be a pocket passer, then will he get Gruden fired too?

Is it something that could become a non-factor...sure. But everything hinges on RG3 and I'm not sold on the man he is.
