This might be a dumb thread, but I'm by myself and bored and re-watching the second episode, so I wanted to make a thread about it. There are certain guys who I'm liking a whole lot more because of this series. I'm going to do the Capitals. If someone wants to chime in with Penguins (or opinions on my comments) feel free.

Caps

Boudreau: Sure he swears a lot and had the barbecue sauce thing, but I disagree with the general consensus around here (meaning Pittsburgh) that the show is making him look like a moron. I actually like him better, and I didn't like him at all. Still not sure if he is capable of leading the Caps to the promised land, but he seems like a generally likeable guy who is passionate about the game. Clearly, every loss or even bad period, bothers him.

OV: I've defended him and I've criticized him, but he has always had a great sense of humor, and him with his PS3, dog, and parents was adorable.

Green: I'm laughing at his scooter and he does have that mouth breather thing going on like Malkin, but his personality is a lot less douchey than his appearance.

GMGM: Guy just looks intense and is extremely smart. He had one of the best quotes of the series when he said if all the writers/pundits knew that much about hockey, they would be in the game.

Knuble: Always liked the guy (despite being a Philly staple), but he obviously is a great leader in the lockerroom. So much respect for guys like that.

Thoughts?

Also, miscellaneous:

The refs: Maybe I'm just dumb or maybe it's because I never played ice hockey, but I didn't know refs "encouraged" the fights. Pretty neat to see, at least, for me.

Unfortunately my folks do not have HBO so I will have to catch up on episodes 2 and 3 when I get back to the Burg in few days but from episode 1, I liked Dupuis a lot, but I had always kind of thought he was funny. I also thought the kids (Connor and Letestu?) were hilarious in the hotel room. Also, Aaron Asham looks like the coolest guy in the room.

As for the Caps, I am still a huge fan of #19....ha ha

agreed on all points:

caps:
1. surprised they havent shown more of brooks laich. he seems like a natural for this series.

2. not too much about the goalies really. would be neat to get into the psyche of 2 young goalies on whom a lot of pressure is being placed.

3. definitely like the management team, boudreau and mcphee, they come across as smart, level headed and patient.

penguins:
1. crosby gets enough airtime, so i'm not too surprised by anything here.

2. pascal dupuis just seems totally cool.

3. matt cooke is (ugh) pretty likable.

in general:
1. the russians haven't gotten much individual time in front of the camera, i mean close up interviews. especially malkin, the only things i've heard him say in the series are "fuck" and "fuck." too bad because he and ovi seem like good interviews.

2. the music is great and relly well placed.

3. hockey looks AMAZING close up, stylized and in HD.

4. holy blue eyes! does every hockey player have those ice blue eyes?

nice. i'm wondering if they're only allowed to interview players with blue eyes.

anyway, hockey players in general come across pretty well in this series. they're all likable and tough as nails. it's amazing to see every face scarred and bruised up.

hendricks looks fuckin mental during his interview. I enjoy everything about this documentary. I wish every team had like an end of year film of their entire season.

Good post. Totally agree about the music. It's awesome. I also agree about your Pens. I like how Sid has come off in this series...he is a guy who can laugh about himself. Dupuis is awesome. And Matt Cooke is endearing, even though he is still Matt Cooke.

This series is doing a fantastic job of showing all players and not just a rivalry as some people thought. I liked Brent Johnson in the second episode as well.

yeah, i felt bad for him that the he lost. funny because i found myself rooting for the penguins even though i hate the penguins and even though i already knew the outcome of the game.

i hope a lot of casual fans are watching this. it's the smartest thing hockey has ever done from a marketing standpoint.

HBO is definitely manipulating me because I wanted the Caps to end their loss streak when watching, but I obviously didn't care when watching games/being a box score hero.

I really dig how the Pens coaching staff goes over the performance of every player after games.
I'd like to see one of those meeting where the feedback gets back to the player (Cooke was given a rating of 2, for example)

hahaha, what does that say about how easily people are manipulated when they can manipulate usinto rooting for a team that we've hated for years.

now i'm no genius, but i consider myself a fairly smart dude, and i am falling for it.

this is why i don't trust politicians.

I think that's so cool as well. I read HF a lot and I see a lot of armchair coaches. It's nice to see the work they put into what they do. And I would also like to see how players responded to ratings. Based on what they said about Dupuis in episode two, it takes a few games for them to directly talk to a player. Though Cooke has been in the wrong place in the lineup since he was put on Geno's line.

Also, cool to see the talk with Jeffery and Bylsma + Shero. Super professional, even though that might have been breaking the kid's heart. Another neat thing was in episode one...Boudreau's discussion about the sick players and what they were going to do with so many guys needing to take a day.

These inside looks are the things I love about the series.
