Glad that's over with. Now they can move on to their other concerns like Dupuis and Cooke.

btw...what's up with the jersey # deals? Sid with the 8.7mil now Letang with the 58mil contract.

Nice

I wonder if Letang got his verbal agreement of not getting 'Cartered' before his old deal expires.

Could be a potential... kicks in next july.

If Letang performs well, and Despres does not regress... I just expect Paul Martin to be bought out (5 million) next year. It'll be time for Dumoulin or Bortuzzo (this year as well) to step next year... and to a lesser degree Harrington, Maatta, Pouliot (probably 2-3 yrs away). Extend Orpik this off season as well.

2014:
Orpik-Letang
Despres- Nisky(?)
Dumoulin (Harrington)-Bortuzzo

34 at the end and 7.25 average?

Term is good, I just hope for his sake that he doesn't get lazy. That's big dollars if he drops off.

Holy NMCs!!! Looking at Cap Geek - Pens have 8 NMCs not counting his that starts next year?

eeek.

I think the Flames had 11 players with NTC/NMCs when Dutter was GM. Difference is the Penguins with the NTC/NMCs are actually good players (lol)

He wanted a verbal promise that he would not get traded before the extension kicks in. They may have told him OK...but, it is a business after all. No guarantees until his new deal kicks in.

Yeah, I don't know what that does...

Letang: "I would be upset if you trade me."
Shero: "What if we verbally agree we don't trade you."
Letang: "Okay, but if you go back on that, I'll be upset."
Shero: "Sounds good. Now if you don't mind, I have some calls to make... about, uh... Fleury."

He got stuck with a partial. There are a few ways this one can go:

A) He doesn't get any better as a player, and by the end of the deal, it's fair.
B) He regresses and life sucks (like any long term deal)
C) He gets better and this is a bargain.

With the cap going up in a few and offensive defensemen being a premium, he could be quite a deal. Can't underestimate his importance...I just worry that it handicaps this team. But hey...that's a 2014 worry. But they're realllllly relying on some ELC help.

You just used JLaw against me...I'm extra hurt.

I mean in that $7.25 could actually be affordable in this world of uber inflated contracts. Have you SEEN the rumored deals out there? Pascal Dupuis is asking for $5M. Tyler Bozak is looking for 8 years. Unless GMs suddenly decide to think clearly in FA, it's not gonna slow down. I don't in anyway think this is a good deal now. I'm just hoping he gets better (there's certainly room for improvement) and the deal will look good by the end.

Name the last D-man who got a fat contract at 26 and got better. Bonus points if he was still as good at 34.

Super bonus points if you name anyone besides Nik Lidstrom or Scott Stevens.

Yes, if he did get better 7.25 will seem a bargain. However it is more likely that I will be able to produce live monkeys out of my ass.

I fear not. Because science.

And, no, the Owners will not learn. And yes, stupid contracts will continue. And we'll get locked out in 8 years AGAIN. Unless someone does something obnoxious and we have to react faster.
