My guess is the guy really did not want to be on the jury and thought this would be a nice way to get out of jury duty. Have to think this case is going to take a long time so Jurors are going to be locked up for quite some time. Still a very stupid stupid move but I could see that being this person's mindset behind this decision.

If you want to get out of jury duty all you need to do is tell them to fuck off. I`ve been throwing those notices in the trash for thirty years, and I`m betting they appreciate not having to deal with me. Besides I`d probably let him walk. All he did was kill a fewgang bangers. Hardly a crime.

Bingo. Although they do risk a citation. I was on a 3 week trial once and the judge let us out after 2pm. In theory we could go back to work.
