What do the Patriots really need this year?

I believe that they need a quality Left and Right offensive tackle. Vollmer and Solder will be back and the Pats have Waddle and Fleming and Cannon to back them up, but Waddle is an unknown and Cannon and Fleming suck as far as I'm concerned. Of course Scar will make me a liar.

Next they need a 3 down running back. A Curtis Martin type who can go between the guard and tackle but has enough speed to get outside.

A corner over 6' who can close and stay with fast guys on the sideline. (The best of these have already been picked)

This is pretty much a draft for the future in my opinion.

Kind of the opposite for me Ken. They need DT. Only have Brown signed for next yr. So I think they double dip. The need another over the C type DT to replace Branch/T-Knight (one cld be back). The need an Dom Eas type who can play inside and out. After last night, there are plenty of both guys with major talent there. They need a RB. Blount, Brown, White, Gaffney are all FA next yr. They need CB, both Ryan/Butler are FA. I am not sure they have any CB under contract past this yr. They need DE also. Only have Flowers and Grissom under contract for next yr. They will need a RT, but I can live with Volly for another year if we have too. WR would be last at this point unless someone falls (Boyd). We have 9 guys on def who are FA next yr. Jabal, Long, Nink, HT, Collins, Branch, T-Knight, Ryan, Butler, Harmon. IDK....I would have to go DT, DE, CB, RB, LB, WR, OL

I disagree with both of you ... they need OL depth now.

The league is favoring an emphasis on rush defenses as evident by the playoffs. I know Denvers D is an anomaly, but the nickel Ds are getting popular ... throw in a Kuechly, and pretty good offenses will fail. I think this NE draft will gear for trades for experienced OL soon or not far down the road.

Then yeah, of course, depth at RB ... they have to expect small RBs can't last long. Devlin's early exit last season, though unheralded, was bigger than most realized by putting some heavy duties on the little guys ( I thought Blount did everything he could but he's just not a hammer without the ball). Devlin coming back will be a big help to the OL.

I do agree with Ken on a tall (very) CB ... I think NE could develop a greeny with the personnel they have now.

... and they've been weak on DT before Vince left.

losing that 1st round sucks ... amongst so many other things

In order of priority from my perspective;

O-line, preferably big, fast and really mean

Linebacker, fast and versatile

D-line, all of the above

D-back, 6' or taller, excellent cover skills and tackling technique

WR, a tall, fast stretch the field type would be sweet.

Am I asking for too much?

With 11 picks in this draft and the depth of talent, you will get all of your wishes.

Glad to see Santa Ken in giving mood. Here's my Christmas wish list. Assuming NE doesn't trade.
2nd Round
1. OT or RB whichever player grades out better
2. DE or DT same as above
3rd round
1. RB if they didn't get one in the 2nd. Once Lewis and Blount went down so did the NE offense. A big 3rd down back.
2. Dline or Oline highest grade at the time.
6th round
1. WR tall without speed on the outside no more midgets unless there is a plan to move Dola.
2. LB or CB highest grade
3. D or O line
4. D or O line
5. Best LB available
7th round
1. D or O line
2. Tall receiver with return ability

Method to my madness. NE doesn't have a lot of holes. Taking those non sexy picks on either side of the line is insurance for the future let Scar and Patricia work with them and a year or two down the road NE has a quality player.
RB I already stated it above. Big 3rd down back. Love Lewis but the rest, meh. Maybe White surprises me? Blount I think is on his last legs. Not sure he can carry the load for a full season any longer? We need that punishing back for late in the year. Hope I'm wrong?
WR just one tall threat with speed to keep the D honest. Imagine the RZ options, Gronk, Bennett, big WR, Edelman and a 3rd down back or Lewis?
LB is a need just not sure the guy is there? Trade or FA next year to fill the void.

2nd Round
1. RBs Henry or Booker. OTs Jason Spriggs or Cody Whitehair.
2. D Line Emmanuel Augbah or Chris Jones
3rd Round
1. C.J. Prosise
2. Noah Spence or LaRaven Clark

Too many variables for 6/7th rounds.

I may have been a little optomistic the way the 2nd is starting.

Crazy. I've never seen a defensive run on picks like this.

Disregard my last post. I just returned from a four day Mancation. 4 days of golf, drinking and poker. I immediately thought Prosise when I read this:loco2:.
Henry as a mid 2nd round would be a big disappointment if he's a bust. Oh well it happens. I'm still a fan of both RBs. I hope they both have success. Except when they play NE.
I was thinking better of Prosise. I had predicted earlier that #1 Elliot was solid and everybody's #2 was not. I think / thought that RB's much deeper in the draft would be as good as #'s 2, 3 4, etc.....

Agreed this years class anyone could emerge as a superstar or bust. Likely the majority all become decent backs with an average NFLcareer of 5 years. Naturally a couple will go longer and some shorter thus the 5 year average.
