Sorry guys this should probably be on the general board.

I and a friend think our Yahoo E-mail may have been hacked. I got strange e-mails and also some were sent from MY account to people on my contact list directing them with a link to some Canadian drug company.

So today I changed my password, did a virus scan and stuff and it seems fine now. Today I got the following e-mail from "Yahoo".

Dear Yahoo! Mail User:

Everything you love about your email just got even better.

Your Yahoo! Mail service has been upgraded to a newer security level to prevent hackers, viruses and spywares from getting into your mailbox.

In order to complete this security update, Please log on to http://mail.yahoo.com

We apologize for any inconvenience(s) and we're working to ensure adequate security for your Yahoo! Mail

Please don't reply directly to this automatically-generated e-mail message.

Sincerely,

Yahoo

It came from this addy
Yahoo! Mail <[email protected]>

I did get an e-mail verifying my PS change earlier. I was just wondering if others have had this problem as well.

Thanks

Steve

I haven't been on Yahoo! Mail in years. I had a lot of security issues, so I deleted my account and switched to Hotmail, which gave me even more problems, and so I eventually settled on Gmail, which isn't perfect, but is a lot better. I would email Yahoo directly to find out if that mail-bot is legitimate, first of all, but until then, only open emails from people you know or companies from which you expect to see emails.

get rid of your yahoo account immediately.
I had a business associate with yahoo account hacked within the last 3 months.
I thought it was a co-incidence but it seems like a growing trend.
His email was sent regarding a sex pill or something.

Thanks Darkstone. I think I will do that from now on. Only open it if I know who sent it and click on no links !!

Also, don't trust a web address that says http instead of https. The s stands for secure. My gmail account always has https.

Well, given what other people have been saying, you might want to get out of Yahoo! altogether. But whatever new server you choose, that's always a good rule of thumb to follow.

Thanks KV, I always forget to look at that. Good advice.

Huh...I swear I got an email today about upgrading my mailbox. I just deleted it...yep there it is. Some crap about my mailbox exceeding it's space (which I know it didn't). But Boss, I agree with others...it's probably time to shop around for a new one. I like Gmail the best.

I got an email that said if I take the pill, it would make me exceed the size of your box. Are you sure you read it correctly?

Yahoo got hijacked a week or so ago, and the same people got AOL (Yeah, some people still use THAT) around the same time. What it was is they spoofed the login page, and when you put your login info in, they either copied it and passed you to the real mail login or copied it and took you back to their fake page. Spammers have figured out that if they have access to large scale email servers like Yahoo, it's cheaper for them to spam.

But my Gmail got hijacked the same way, so no service is perfect. Although, Gmail does have lots of features like the ability to look at the last locations "you" have logged in from. After mine got hijacked, "I" logged in from Singapore and China.

The email you got from Yahoo, the mailbot one, was probably legit. Although it told you to follow a link. It should have told you to go log in without a link. Subtle difference, but a difference. No bank, email service, etc should ask you to follow a link to adjust security or verify info. They should tell you to go to their site or call their call center. If they do use links, it's a scam or their security sucks.

What I tell people is if you are trying to log into anything that uses a password and it seems to fail and kicks you back to the login page - change your password ASAP. Also, get into the habit of looking at your "Sent mail" folder regularly. If you see a message you didn't send, change your password.

Also, it's a pain, but use a passphrase, not a password. "DerekRoyisaDiver" is way harder to crack than "Roy!" :D

I deal with this stuff all day every day. I busted someone trying to transfer 75 grand out of a customers bank account just this morning...

I can hear the thoughts of that person now...

"Okay...so, if I can just sneak this little bit of money past this security wall on here I'll be homefree, so clos....DAMNIT! How'd they notice that?"

"They'll never notice $75,000 missing..."

Balls, I don't think there's that much money in my parents' combined bank accounts. I know all I have to my name is about $1000...

Thanks 43, Now I have your passphrase. That would have been easy to crack though.
