Whitecaps can the Icelandic tactician...

The struggling Vancouver Whitecaps FC have fired coach Teitur Thordarson after the club started with only one win in its first dozen games of its expansion Major League Soccer season.

Vancouver is last place in the Western Conference at 1-5-6.

It was a sombre Monday morning in east Vancouver when Thordarson's firing was announced. He joined the club in late 2007, when Vancouver played in lower-tier leagues, and was popular among fans, the team and the club's front office.

"It's not a day that any of us" said Bobby Lenarduzzi, the club president, stumbling on his words, "are feeling good about."

Thordarson is being replaced by Tom Soehn, a former DC United head coach who is the Whitecaps director of soccer operations.

Paul Barber, CEO of the club and former Premiership executive, said high-level soccer is results orientated and one win to date was inadequate for the team to reach its ambitions.

"We needed to act decisively," Mr. Barber said.

i use the OT eng premier thread as my soccer catchall when not talking to myself on the soccer forum

Its interesting that they replaced him with Soehn ... he was part responsible for the Whitecaps adhering to the Prozone software metrics.

The metrics showed their most talented offensive player, Davide Chiumiento wasnt tracking back and helping out on the defensive side so Teitur convinced him to work harder and make a concerted effort to run back more when all Chiumiento wants to do (and should be doing) is create offense

we'll see what Tommy does with the unflattering numbers now that he is on the field coaching

The fact is that the season is still in the early stages and the Caps are an expansion team just like the Timbers. Having said that, the compete level just seems to be diminishing as the season goes on. Clearly motivation is an issue there and I can't really blame the ownership for wanting to make a change in order to right the ship as quickly as possible so they don't sour fans on the idea of the team in it's first year.

I dont agree with that at all ... theyve actually played better and more committed defensively lately after they got alot of their back end players healthy. Theyve had some horrible defensive lapses because of having the defenders playing out of position. And the scheduling has been atrocious ... at one point they played 4 games in 10 days ... some NHL teams dont even do that

Theyve only lost by more than 1 goal once this year ... and fans arent going to sour on them dont worry ... we have a soccer history here

I will draw a comparison with the canucks since this is a hockey board ... Vigneault used to be criticized and the common refrain was "he cant coach offense" ... bullcrap ... if he had the offensive talent, he could coach an offensive system

for teitur, how could they expect him to coach more defensively when they had Rochat playing out of position and a slew of injuries and national team absences to deal with

The canucks were patient with Vigneault ... Caps should have been patient with Teitur

also Teitur and Mike Salmon were probably the only guys in the organization that are Jay Nolly backers ... they have $200k worth of goalie acquired by the new head coach Tom Soehn (Joe Cannon) riding the bench ... watch him start next game
