Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson dies - ESPN

I grew up watching The Big Red Machine battle the Buccos in the 70's year in and year out it seemed. Sparky was what a baseball manager should have been, a gruff old man who didn't take shit from anybody.

I truly think the 70s were the heyday of baseball for me (there I go showing my age again). Let me see how many position players I can recall from those great Reds teams:

C - Johnny Bench
1B - Tony Perez
2B - Joe Morgan
SS - Dave Concecpcion (SP?)
3B - Pete Rose
RF - Dave Parker?
CF - Ceasar Geronimo
LF - George Foster

Very good dash, Parker was with the Pirates then, replace him with Ken Griffey Sr. Plus they had Dan Driessen in the mix as well.

I knew Parker was wrong, I :L myself for forgetting Ken Griffey Sr. Nice job for remembering Dan Driessen as well.

Man, what a collection of talent.

Great manager. I've never heard anybody say anything but good things about the man. RIP Sparky

Great manager, one of the best.

He was involved in a practical joke show years ago where he was supposed to be sending a player down for something trivial the player did (or something like that). It wasnt a great joke but it was funny because Sparky could not keep a straight face at all.

And of course the mirror image of all of that in the Orioles. Epic battles.

Sparky was my second favorite skipper behind Earl Weaver. RIP
