Not surprised, Chiarelli said he was unhappy with the culture of his team a few months ago and hinted they would be headed in this direction.

About 3-4 years ago I said no matter how much talent they have, their losing culture is so ingrained in that organization a full overhaul was needed; this was when Lowe was the GM and every former glamorous Oiler was in some management capacity, some even in created ones (like the Kings did with Emerson). I'm starting to believe that it may be even way beyond that, which is mind boggling considering some changes have been made at the management level. Maybe Chiarelli bit off more than he can chew.

But with this news, this helps LA by giving them more options in case Lucic doesn't stay in LA. Would love to see a player like Eberle or Hall in LA.

No kidding right? Just going back to 2006 when they had their miracle run, these are their 1st round picks and number:

2006 - None (Pronger to Anaheim deal I am assuming)
2007 - Sam Gagner/Alex Plante/Riley Nash (6, 15, 21)
2008 - Eberle (22)
2009 - Paajarvi-Svensson (10)
2010 - Hall (1)
2011 - Nugent-Hopkins/Klefbom (1, 19)
2012 - Yakupov (1)
2013 - Nurse (7)
2014 - Draisaitl (3)
2015 - McDavid (1)

So in summary:
1st overalls - 4
Top 5 - 5
Top 10 - 8

You have 8 top 10 picks in 10 years including 4 numbers 1s and still suck this bad? There is some seriously bad scouting and development going on up there.

Forgot about Yakupov, what ever happened to that guy? He looked like the real deal his rookie season.

Blowing what up? Edmonton I thought had been building around their young core for years now, is the only safe guy McDavid?

He's still in Edmonton and his name swirls in trade rumors constantly. Knock on him is the usual Euro knocks, not willing to play physical and up to his potential.

He's 22 so he has some time to develop, and probably will be a late bloomer, but right now that 1st overall isn't looking too good 4 years after being drafted.

According to Chiarelli, only McDavid and Draisaitl are safe. He has seen enough of their underachieving, that entire organization needs a culture change from management to the janitor.

I don't think that they will get the returns that the are looking for. They don't need new players, they need new front office. People that can teach these kids how to be proud. With pride there will be wins.

PROBLEM: 9 forwards & only 3 defensemen (Plante, Klefbom, Nurse), 0 goalies.
Absolutely NOT the way to build a winner..

That was their model by design. They wanted to resurrect the high powered Oilers of the 1980s which is why they drafted who they did. This was specifically mentioned by either Lowe or MacTavish (don't remember which one), which makes sense considering both those guys are held high in Oilers lore but it wasn't the right move.

You'll also hear people say because of their draft position and draft pool in specific years they had no choice but to take certain players. Yakupov, for example, was the #1 ranked player in his draft year so even though the Oilers had the 1st overall and needed a defender they went with him because they had to. I say hog wash, ever heard of trading down? Or making a move to better position yourself at the draft?

Look at 2008 when the Kings took Doughty. Stamkos was the clear number one by CSB and Dumbo made it essentially clear that no matter if the Kings picked 2nd or won the lottery and went 1st, he was going to take Doughty. He had a plan and stuck with it. On any Cup team you need two T2 defenders - no questions about it, and Dumbo had that plan in mind. I personally think even at 1st overall, Stamkos was never going to be a King.

So he takes Doughty at 2nd overall and then takes the 28th pick (from Dallas in the Norstrom deal) and the 17th pick (Calgary, Cammalleri trade) and trades them both to Anaheim for the 12th overall pick. However, Buffalo owned the 13th pick and had their eyes set on Tyler Myers but the Kings didn't know that; they just knew they were going to pick a defender. There was also a third team involved who the Kings had a deal in place with to drop down a few spots but Buffalo wasn't sure they could still get Myers at 13th.

Dumbo wanted Teubert and was afraid he wouldn't be available a few spots later so he approaches the Sabres and they literally wrote down the name of each player they wanted and if the names were different, they would make the trade. The names were different, they swapped the 12th and 13th overall picks and Dumbo got the player he wanted and Buffalo got the player they wanted. Assed out was the third team involved, whoever that was.

It didn't pan out, Teubert sucks and was traded ironically to these same Oilers but my point is a shrewd GM will take the player he needs, not the best available unless it's a generational talent essentially. Yakupov was not and will not be a generational talent and the Oilers should have maneuvered the way Dumbo did to get the player the organization needed.
