I got to thinking about this today beacause of something that I caught on the SyFy channel when I was woken up far to early this morning by wet noses and barking...

I am an "apparent" accredited hard core scientist with a publication record, 22 page CV and a record of teaching (scary thought)...yet I still find nyself cruisinig the internet daily and keeping up to dat on Cryptozoology. I was devestated when Monsterquest went off the air. I knew that they found virtually nothing but they used a real Pyrrhonian sketpticism as all scientists should and I really enjoyed the show.

I literally sent off an email to the people form a show on SyFy this morning regarding one of their investigations and my take on it based on my knowledge. It made me realize a few things:

1. I really need to set up some beds in the basement for these dogs.

2. I did NOT need to stay out that late last night at the Mt. Lebanon street fair.

3. I AM A COMPLETE AND TOTAL FUCKING NERD!

4. I am obsessed with something extremely esoteric and odd.

I assume evryone has some sort of hobby like this, or at least I hope tgat I am not alone....

Anyone.....

I just recently got myself caught up in the Collatz conjecture after stumbling on it from an unrelated internet search and spent days of my work time trying to prove it. I came up with a pseudo proof outline after many hours, only to find out that I went down the same path and came to the same roundabout inconclusive conclusion as someone else had already done years ago.

At least it gave me some satisfaction that my math skills weren't totally decayed. :)

EDIT: Also, speaking of science-related TV shows, I was extremely disappointed when "The 4400" got cancelled back in the mid '00s

I read and reread biographies of serial killers religiously.

Oh, and I like to scuba dive.

Google "Collatz" and "The 4400" for your answers. You'll get a better understanding than I could provide here :)

Are those "hobbies" or just strange attributes or idiosyncrasies?

Well the obsession with cryptozoology, to the level that I would actually email my conjectures to the syfy producers is the hobby...the rest are just a result of my realizing that I had this hobby.

I also sometimes dress like Ronald McDonald and eat people. Here's a pic:

You wouldn't believe the weight one gains doing this. I've had to cut back to three kindergarteners a week.
