I assume the climbers complained that it made them too tired, and that it was actually more dangerous to use the harness than to not. Personally, if I absolutely had to go up there, I would use the harness.

Retail in the age of cell phones. I worked in photo labs-stores in the mid 90s. Customers (some) were bad enough then. I cannot imagine dealing with the cell phone rudeness I see now.
