@Comeds @forty_three this is very odd trade for the O's. Getting rid of a top prospect for a one year wonder who is 31 and in the last year of a contract seems like a loss. Yeah Rodriguez was hurt last year but still has a lot of value, seems like an overpay for Ward.

I don't disagree completely. While I do have my own doubts about Grayson's arm holding up at this point, I wish Ward was a year or two younger and a bit more consistent. I wont completely agree with Ward being a one year wonder, last year was certainly his best year but three out of the last 4 years have been decent. Also from what I read Orioles have arbitration rights after 2026, which is not nothing.

Short term - I'd bet on Ward having a good year next year over Grayson having a good year. Wouldn't mind being wrong, Grayson seems like a good guy, I hope he does well. Three years down the road though......

Honestly pitching drives me crazy, and would even more if I was a GM. Its the most important part of the game and it seems like they all blow their arms out at some point. Also if I was Orioles GM Elias - I am sending Trevor Rogers a big$ multi year extension offer this week.

Couple more things. While I am not saying at all that this move could put the Orioles over the top or any nonsense like that - I bet the club feels if it could help them possibly go further NOW then they probably willing to risk looking bad in a few years. Young player's second contract time is coming fast.

Also young promising but not yet established pitchers with arm problems trade value does seem to nose dive. Not saying the trade wont be a mistake, but not sure they could have gotten Ward if he was 26.

I agree 100%. Grayson didn't pitch last year so there is no guarantee he comes out looking good.
And all that makes perfect sense. Seems like Ward was over valued here but in the end hitters tend to stay healthier without missing who years to arm issues.

As for Ward I wasn't aware he had one more year of arbitration (all the articles stated he was a FA - but just checked baseball reference and yep he has one more year of arbitration). I don't think he will replicate his 2025 numbers but if he can replicate 2022/2024 there is value.

In the end, not discounting Ward but it just seemed on the surface that was a lot of prospect value given up for him.

There would be no chance of getting him if he was 26 for one pitcher. That deal would have required more prospects, age is a huge factor in these types of deals. If Ward was 26 he would probably be controlled until 2029, at the earliest which garners a ton of value alone.

I just meant that while it does not seem to be a huge return, I am not sure how much better they could have done for a pitcher who has been hurt for the last year and a 3rd.

The good thing is Ward hardly ever strikes out, just 175 times last year, so he'll fit right in with the Oriole's disciplined hitters.

Oh yeah that is always a challenge with pitchers coming off arm issues.

And LOL about the strikeouts. Sad that 175 isn't even top 15th most in the baseball anymore.

This feels like a win for the Angels but pitchers arms are always an unknown.

Trading for an Angel is usually good business as the franchise is top to bottom a shitshow and when players leave they can only get better. Maybe not better than 35/100 but at least the same with a better average and less K’s.

/getting rid of Grayson means the O’s are all in on trading for Skubal now too

@Comeds @forty_three

Got a good deal for a closer. That time in the Mets probably scared people off but it is the Mets. Everyone sucks there.

Hope so. Honestly don't know much about him, since he's always been in the national league I haven't seen him so much.

He was very good in St Louis and made a lot of hitter miss bats. Granted it helps pitching against the NL central, look at Devin Williams and the Mets just paid him more.

@Comeds @forty_three O's are getting more help at hitting!

Pirates now 0-3 on getting hitting help, probably lowballed Alonso also!
Just read that. Nice move. Not sure what happened to Mountcastle after a fantastic rookie year, but they needed more production from 1B. Love to see a selective higher average hitter added too. Mayo was that in the minors, not in the bigs yet.
