Hey, I was hoping you guys could help me out (and I really didn't want to go to the regular football board because this is just newbie shit).

I am participating in a fantasy football league...and I know nothing about football. Okay, I know the rules, positions, some players, etc, but not really enough about players to make informed decisions. I'm only doing this because it's a work thing. Anyway, for hockey, I am very organized for my draft and have certain strategies, but I don't know where to begin here. I could go to a fantasy site obviously, but I know for hockey, those suck 75% of the time, which is why I would rather get some advice from people I "know" (or at least advice on a good resource).

Questions:

What strategies do you use in drafting? What positions do you select first? Last? What's your priority? (I know it depends on the points system, but speaking generally here.)

Who is injured this year? Going to miss a large portion of the year? Who is an injury risk?

Any sleepers? Rookies who have a good chance at making an impact?

I have the fifth pick. Assuming that certain players are taken 1-4, who is a good choice for that pick?

Like I said, if you just want to point me to a good resource, that is cool (or give me your own advice). Looking for many opinions here (rep for those that help me out if i can give it to you!)

Thanks guys.

Well, I would like to ask 1 question before I help: Do you know if there are 4 Points or 6 points per passing TD?

Okay then here is my advice!

1) I like drafting towards the front, but not 1st overall. you said you have the 5th pick, so at that pick, I would take a RB (see link later in post) I would try to get a top 7 QB(Before Brett Favre), get 2 WR in your first 5 picks, 6 of your first 7 picks should be WR or RBs, You can wait a bit on TE as it is deep this year. WAIT UNTIL YOUR FINAL PICK FOR A KICKER!!! I wait untill the 2nd to last round for Defense/special teams, but most pick before that. But wait untill after the 12th round atleast.

2) Sidney Rice WR, Min is out for about half a season. Santonio Holmes WR NYJ is suspended for the first 4 games this year. Vincent Jackson WR SD is suspended for the first 3(i think 3) games this year. Big Ben QB PIT is suspended for 4-6 games. Donnie Avery suffured a bad knee injury last night.

3) CJ spiller RB, Buf is a speedy guy who has a solid chance of a starting job due to injuries. Javid Best RB DET should get the bulk of the carries in that backfield, and Detroit running backs are more productive than you think. Dez Bryant WR DAL could be starting by mid year depending on some things, but he should still get good playing time before that

4) well assuming that the top 4 are taken, I would take Frank Gore.

5) they may suck with NHL, but ESPN knows fantasy sports pretty well

Fantasy Football player rankings for the 2010 NFL football season - Fantasy Football - ESPN

If you use that list to help you, you should end up with a beter team than you would on your own! But don't follow it to a 'T', you can go a little beyond what the list would want you to take if you need a RB insted of a WR

Hope this helps loki!

I won't have anything else to do (besides homework, which can clearly wait).

Loki, Yahoo has a rankings list too. Some sites if you are logged into whatever site is hosting your league, their draft list is created by that leagues individual point system. Most point systems are similar though.

Most all leagues are RB driven and they generally get the most points. Plus each team primarily has one RB where lots of teams have numerous decent receivers.

If you pick first, I'd go RB. Otherwise just kind of see who other players are taking. Many times it seems like suddenly there is a run on a specific position.

No problem, and Fantasy football is probably 10% Skill and 90% luck
My bad luck would then eclipse my limited skill, which is why I never do fantasy fb.

I think it depends on where your drafting. With the 5th pick you should definately take a RB in round 1. I wouldn't consider a QB until at least the 3rd round. Pay attention to what the other players are doing. If you see a run on a particular position it could give you an opportunity at someone who might not have been available otherwise. Or you might have to take a player at that position or you could miss out.

I really like the way this kid looks so far. He had a run against the Colts (starters) last week and made three guys miss him, two of them look like fools. He is quick !!
