Today is the anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. Terrible story made famous by Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot. RIP men.

Many theories, books, studies and expeditions have examined the cause of the sinking. The Fitzgerald may have fallen victim to the high waves of the storm, suffered structural failure, been swamped with water entering through her cargo hatches or deck, experienced topside damage, or shoaled in a shallow part of Lake Superior. The sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one of the best-known disasters in the history of Great Lakes shipping. Gordon Lightfoot made it the subject of his 1976 hit song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

Investigations into the sinking led to changes in Great Lakes shipping regulations and practices that included mandatory survival suits, depth finders, positioning systems, increased freeboard, and more frequent inspection of vessels.

This story and song probably means a lot more to people living in the Great Lakes region and the 40+ age group.

In the more rural areas, especially in northern Michigan and in the thumb, you can still hear that song on the radio every day. Hell they taught us the story and the song in grade school.

RIP Edmund Fitzgerald and all who lost their lives that day.

Maybe Boss...I'm 44 and it's one of my all time fave songs...and I have to admit that I probably wouldn't know the whole story if not for the song...

If you get the time read the link I posted. It is so interesting that in 1975 they really don't know what went wrong. You would think it happened in the 40's or 50's. I find it very interesting. Then again. like I said i love stuff like that.

BTW. You're right Gordon Lightfoot did a fantastic job of telling the story in his song.

When ships go down fast this still happens. We lose guts every year on commercial fishing boats right off teh shore....its dangerous out there

I see that almost every time I go to the store by my house, I've never bought it though.

It's not a favorite of mine, but very enjoyable. Great Lakes 3 best beers are Dortmunder Gold, Christmas Ale (only available part of the year - delicious, dark, and like 10% ABV), and then Edmund Fitzgerald. The rest I'd pass on, but those three are solid.

The first beer I ever brewed was an Edmund Fitzgerald clone. It turned out well.

RIP to the crew of that ship.

Thanks for the thread, BOSS.

And to Gordon Lightfoot.

:rip: to the men who lost their lives. They were so close to land, which makes the tragedy that much more potent.

I wore out my parents record when I was a kid. Good thing they put that song on Gord's Gold Volume 2.

Yes, I can probably sing that song word for word even today.

when the band got together, we used to segue John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" into "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
that was good for about 12 minutes of jamming
