Don't live in Detroit, but have been through. Obviously the whole town isn't like that, but that is accurate. There are some amazingly nice and beautiful neighborhoods in Detroit, and some huge swaths that are reverting back to forest. Go on Google Earth, you will see areas where there are entire city blocks and neighborhoods that have been bulldozed and demolished.

"I can't take it anymore, stuck here in Iraq, buildings torn up everywhere, not a decent looking woman in sight, bad food, filthy streets...."

"Dude, shake your shellshock, you've been home in Detroit for weeks!!"

Didnt Dave Bing run for mayor on a campaign of "abandoning" whole neighbourhoods (ie bulddozing them) and turning them into parkland.

The municipal costs to service these areas where only a handful of people lived and paid taxes made the idea acceptable

It's actually a very unpopular idea in the "target" neighborhoods. But when you have a city that used to have 1.5M people that now has 900K, your tax base is wiped out but you're still trying to maintain sewers, potholes*, police and fire... it's the only reasonable solution.

*it's a good thing Detroit isn't subsidizing the Wings with a $50M bond...
