OT California Travel advice

I've been to the bay area but never to Newport Beach. I'm flying out there in October and was wondering what is the best airport to fly into would it be LAX?
I know there are some other airports there like Orange county.

I don't think we have a lot of Cali folks here so I may ask at the Water cooler if no one knows.

Newport Beach is in Orange County, so if that's where your trip is based, then the John Wayne Airport is your best bet if the flights are convenient and cost effective.
LAX is only about 40-50 miles away though, for a good plan B.

Yeah not sure if i'm flying out of Buffalo or going to visit my sister in S Carolina first then I would be flying out of Atlanta or going to see my son and daughter in law (because we are meeting them in Cal) if that's the case I will be flying out of Detroit.

Looks like I will be doing a lot of fare searching.

As mentioned, fly to John Wayne (SNA) unless LAX allows you a flight you prefer better. I often am willing to fly outta LAX instead of my preferred, closer airport (ONT) because there are so many more nonstop flights. Nonstop trumps everything to me, especially if its a redeye back to the East Coast.

John Wayne SNA is the way to go if you can.
It is right next to Newport
Traffic at the airport is not too bad avoid the 55 freeway if you can.
The 73 turns into a toll road if you are going south

Yeah, definitely don't fly into LAX if you can avoid it (John Wayne/SNA is the way to go)... the 405 freeway (which you'd have to take) is a nightmare pretty much anytime.

Unless you'd like to experience the road-rage that we're all accustomed to here. Hah!

Hey Boss definately fly into John Wayne. LAX is a NIGHTMARE.

One time I was waiting to board a flight to Vegas from John Wayne, the airline announced they overbooked the flight. The airline offered anyone willing to fly out of LAX a free LIMO ride to LAX.

NOBODY accepted the offer.

I agree on John Wayne, I've flown into all 3 LA metro airports (LAX, Ontario and JW) and John Wayne is definitely the best. Be forewarned though, due to the housing around it, the pilots are required to make a steeper descent in. Not a nice gentle flow, a noticeable drop. At least the last pilot I had kinda dropped it. We weren't expecting it, so it was a little odd. My cousin who was a commercial pilot (now flies Cargo) said he liked flying into there, but then again he's insane. He also liked flying into Denver because of the wind coming up the mountain. He called it "surfing it in".

As for getting around, you need a car. And about twice as much time as you think you do. I spent a few months in Westminster (Huntington Beach) and sometimes we got places faster by bike.

If you're going from Atlanta, definitely check out John Wayne, because the only airport on the East coast that flies non-stop, though you'll probably pay out the nose for it.

It's also a nice small airport (relative to LAX at least), so not nearly the hassle.
