I think it is when someone who has zero rep power gives you rep, as it has no effect on your score.
the only grey one i 've gotten was when doofster gave me neg rep (zero value) for being a meanie.

puck is correct - I copied the following from the FAQ:

Reputation may be positive (green) , negative (red) or neutral (grey) . Negative reputation may only be given if the administrator has enabled this. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.

/Still, it probably wouldn't hurt to have Dr. SportsHoopla have a look at the grey discoloration
