I've done one of these before but don't feel like looking for it, I'm always looking for new stuff to read. I always prefer non-fiction and I know last time you guys came up with a ton of good books.

Any recommendations? Literally anything, sports, history, humor, crime, politics, pop culture, I'm up for anything.

Couple of good one's I've read lately, The President's Club, Will To Live, The Dream Team. I figure we'll all have more time on our hands to read over the winter.

I'm a big history buff (my dad was a college History professor) & my favorite subject is World War One. I just finished up a book called; The Lost History of 1914 by Jack Beatty. It looks at major social/political scenarios that were playing out in the various European countries in the years just prior to the outbreak of war that might possibly have lead them away from taking up arms, if only someone/something had turned left instead or right, so to speak.

Pretty interesting stuff, if you are into that period in history.

I hear this 50 Shades of Grey is quite popular. It's set in Seattle and I'm not sure what it's about, but I would assume grunge music or something.

Might've been Jstew, but whoever recommended "The Fix", I thank you. This book is amazing, although it's almost ruining certain sports for me. Now I'm convinced half of college football/baseketball games, lesser Euro/World Cup games and the entire KHL has fixing going on.

glad you enjoyed "the Fix", Nasty ... my brother told me someone is trying to make it into a screenplay ... no idea how thats gonna work or who in the soccer world would cooperate

just read about this book a few mins ago and its piqued my interest

A new book about how children are different from their parents includes an interview with the parents of one of the Columbine shooters.

The book is called "Far from the Tree" and it was written by Andrew Solomon.

While the book includes interviews with hundreds of families dealing with children with autism, down syndrome, mental illness and other diseases, it also includes interviews with parents who children have committed terrible crimes

Another good sports book - Nick Hornby's "Fever Pitch." It is nothing like the movie that made "based" on the book which really had very little to do with the actual book. Good journey into one fan's fandom, obsession with sports, and how it relates/intermingles with their life.

yes, I've seen the Kevin movie. it's pretty thought provoking, like the book.
haven't seen Extremely Loud. that just looks like a bummer from the getgo. Along that lines, I had to wait until the wife was out one evening before watching The Cove (the one about dolphin slaughter in japan)

i can't decide if i liked that movie or not. it was really sad, but also a great story. i hate sad movies.

as far as books go, if you haven't read "the code" as a hockey fan, i would highly recommend it. gives good insight into the game inside the game, and why hockey is different from every other sport.

That was a solid one. It humanizes fighting in a way most outsiders can't understand.

I think I am going to pick up Cloud Atlas. The movie was fucking excellent. Definitely my kind of story. I highly suggest looking into it.

Hey Comeds

Gideon Crew is no Aloysius Perdergast and I am already almost done with that line of books :(

I haven't read the second Gideon book yet. Not sure if I will. I am kind of worried where the Pendergast series is going.

i feel obligated to throw my 2 cents in about my favorite series....Orson Scott Card's Ender series. it's a sci-fi futuristic series which i usually dislike, but it is very well done. the first book reads like a harry potter book, but the rest are very deep. start with Ender's Game (the Harry Potter one).

The Zombie Survival guide & World War Z by Max Brooks I believe. Everyone knows it;s only a matter of time before your neighbor tries to gnaw your arm off, so why not be prepared. They're both really entertaining and some of the info in there could be used towards most emergency scenarios.

Also War & Peace if you haven't read it yet, but be warned you need to re-read parts to fully comprehend what's attempting to be said at parts.

Read that first one last year, enjoyed it. Didn't know there were others - seemed like a pretty complete storyline. It's been a while since I've read much sci-fi, thinking of giving the Foundation series (Asimov - sci-fi's version of LOTR) another go.

For voracious readers, if you like historical fiction, I can't overly recommend the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brien. There's about twenty of them. The first two or three are a bit tough, mostly because it's written in the vocabulary and dialogue of the time (Nelson-era Britsh naval warfare), but if you invest, it's one of the most rewarding literary experiences I can recall.
