start with a reboot.

If that doesnt work, try a reboot in safemode to see if you still get the BSOD.

Outside of that, A) you have not given enough info to truly help; and B) Good thing W7 was supposed to end the dreaded BSOD...

You did set a system restore point right? If so, use system restore to get you're state back to that point.

If not, most of the BSOD I've dealt with have been caused by a corrupted file, usually you'll see which file it is in the error message associated with the BSOD.

Once you know which file it is, you need to access your main drive as a slave to another boot drive, and then it's a simple matter of saving a new copy of the corrupted file to the appropriate folder. Helps to have a few copies of windows around to pull individual system files from, as the install disks will be in a compressed form and most individual files are hard to get to.

Now this part probably isn't going to help you, but: it's nice to have "live" versions of linux on DVD/CD disks. If you direct your boot process to boot off of the DVD drive, these will boot your computer into a functional linux operating system, and automatically attach your main hard drive as a "slave". Then it's a snap to fix the problems with Windows.

Does it have red letters on the screen, saying like waning or something?

Wow. You'd be surprised at how much money you could save by learning the basics of computing. Geek Squad and others are a rip off.

I guess it depends upon how much one's time is worth. Given what I charge an hour for my time, it really doesn't make sense for me to invest a ton of time in computer operations. Not saying it's dumb to do so, just not a good use of my time.

they are a rip off only to people who have more time than money.

Its like having a shop fix your car instead of doing it yourself.. cheaper to do by yourself until you need some expensive tool, lift, etc.

You can end up doing more damage than good trying to fix it yourself.

Bingo. That's why I don't harvest my own food either.

Not necessary with Windows 7. When you use F8 to access the boot menu Windows 7 has a repair option. If it is a corrupt Windows system file this will fix it. If it is a corrupt OEM driver go into safe mode with networking and download the driver from the manufacturer's web site and install it.

Another thing to do is run chkdsk from a command prompt (you may need to boot from a CD/DVD to do this).

I don't think I've ever had a case where windows was able to repair itself. But, then again, I haven't used Windows in years, and the only time I'm exposed to these days is when a friend asks for help with a broken computer.

Opportunity costs, sure. It must cost you a fortune to post here, assuming you can bill clients 24/7.

Not to mention that he's past due on 3 months worth of posting here. Sorry to air dirty laundry here tz, but I have a wicked drug habit that needs a fix.

I knew there was a reason why I didn't charge you dues. Needless to say, you've been worth every penny you haven't paid.

...and little did you know that I'd gladly pay double.

I know you're kidding me, but that could be said for any activity (outside of sleep and basic life maintenance which allows the billing). For instance, the average baseball game "costs" me over $1000. However, one can't spend one's life as a slave to the billed hour. Or at least I can't.

OTOH, when it comes to things I don't want to do (e.g. learning about my PC so that I can repair it), that very much for me is time I'd rather spend billing (another thing I don't really WANT to do). Consider it a perfect example of Pareto optimization -- I can pay someone $50/hr or I can bill for several times that amount.

For those who enjoy learning about computer operations, my paradigm wouldn't apply.

There will be a process server coming by to see you shortly. We can discuss settlement terms. :finger:
