ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Carlos Quentin has been "talked about internally" by the Orioles.

The Orioles appear intent on adding a notable bat to fill their designated hitter slot. Quentin is having a nice year for the Padres, batting .278/.366/.500 with 13 homers and 44 RBI. He's owed about $24 million through the 2015 season and has a $10 million mutual option for 2016.

What are your opinions that we may make a move for Quentin?

Personally, I would rather "buy low" by taking the chance on someone with good career numbers who happens to be struggling recently, as any regression to the mean would occur in the positive direction. In contrast, getting someone with one good year is usually asking for regression to the mean in the negative direction.

Does this idea apply to Quentin? Apparently, his numbers this year are comparable to his career stats, with a slight improvement. But the following aspects of his performance this year appear unsustainable to me:

Line drive rate: 20.1% this season, versus a career average of 16.0%
Infield hit rate: 11.8% (career average: 6.2%)

Verdict: Pass. Once the line drive percentage drops back to normal, so would his OPS. While he might still be an upgrade over our DHs this year, keeping him into 2015 doesn't seem wise.

He will be the best thing that ever happened to the Orioles.
