If I translate the "haul" into Leaf assets, I am very underwhelmed. And would have made the deal in a heartbeat

Same here. No way the Jackets could afford him next year, but adding him to Werenski/Jones/Murray for a year losing only, say Kukan, Sedlak and two guys who haven't made it yet?

Hells to the yeah.

I think, dumb as they are (see the conditional pick that becomes a first if SJ trades Karlsson to an Eastern Conference team), they probably wanted more pieces or better quality from potential trade partners in-division.

Why a rebuilding team would give a rats ass about trading Karlsson to Toronto or TB when neither team could likely re-sign him long-term anyway if they were offering a better package than SJ, hey, who fucking knows. SJ made a better trade with Hoffman in 10 minutes than Ottawa did in 6 months of trying.

But Ottawa got two current NHLers, one on each side of the blue line, out of this deal. I don't think Toronto realistically had anything up front that matches Tierney (besides Kadri, who isn't going anywhere) or De Melo, unless they wanted Zaitsev. Shit, we should've traded them Zaitsev.

Also, giving up Liljegren for a year of Karlsson, crazy as it might sound, doesn't really appeal to me and he probably would've had to been included.

I have to think the Oilers could have put together a much better package to land Karlsson (including Nurse), but I for one am sure glad they didn't.

I think it's very telling they didn't - it tells me management doesn't think this team can win this year. If they did, they'd do like SJ did and take the chance even if EK winds up bolting after the season. WTF do you have to lose when you're already a cap team and employ the best player in the game?

FWIW, I'd have given Edmonton a great chance of making some noise had they gotten him.

I don't know. I would love them to get into (more) cap trouble and have to sell RNH cheap.

I cant imagine the market for old, slow, lumbering forwards coming off a 12 point season is all that prosperous.

It was sarcasm.

Seriously he will make the Canadiens and if on the roster come the trade deadline a team desperate for the playoffs will make an offer for him.

history has shown a player like Joel Ward at this stage of his career would get a 4 year contract from the canucks
