I need my brother in law, Manny Malhotra of the Vancouver Canucks, to have a successful eye surgery tomorrow saving his eye and vision.

I wish the best for Manny tomorrow...

/I know this is way down on the priority list, but I think a player has to have a minimum amount of vision in both eyes in order to play in the NHL...Just not sure what the minimum level is.

Bryan Berard

On March 11, 2000, while Berard was playing for the Leafs in a game against the Senators in Ottawa, the stick of Marián Hossa clipped Berard in the right eye, severely injuring it. The eye was severely slashed on the sclera which resulted in a retinal tear and a detached retina. In the hospital room after the incident, after being told he might lose his eye, Berard reportedly told his friends that he would play hockey again. Despite being optimistic about his future in hockey, he ended up receiving a $6.5 million settlement from his insurance company, what many considered to be a career-ending settlement.

During the next season, he underwent seven eye operations, improving his vision in the eye to 20/600. He started working out again in April 2001 and started skating again months thereafter. He was later fitted with a contact lens that allowed him to meet the league's minimum vision requirement of 20/400.

good luck Manny

Same type of injury really hurt Colin White's career on the Devils. He was well on his way to being a top pairing guy for us when he took a shot off the eye in practice. He missed a ton of time, his vision never got back to where it was and at times it really shows.

From the twitter of Bob McKenzie:

I am hearing Malhotra's surgery went as well as could be expected but it may be 6 to 8 weeks before there is a firm long term prognosis.

#Canucks Maholtra told by Dr Chang that he believes there's a very good chance he'll resume his career. 6-8 weeks critical in recovery.

All players coming up through the junior leagues wear them... how hard is it for these kids to keep them on when/if they make it to the NHL?

It's kinda like smoking. People lose friends or family to lung cancer, yet they are smokers themselves still.

For some people, visors are a hindrance, and they don't think anything bad can happen to them.
