This is pretty sweet.

but someone needs to answer me this: Does each guy have to pay their portion of the cost of the meal? or can the school pick this up as just a normal meal to a student athlete?

I believe that they removed the restrictions on how much/what food you can buy for the athletes. I would imagine they could count this as a team meal sort of thing and have the department pick up the tab.
