Ohio State always protects it's brand. I believe this started with a dispute in the 80's with Ohio Univerisity selling Ohio State merchandise.

I lived in Ohio for 17 year, and I became fond of the Buckeyes. However, the "THE" fetish is rather stupid IMO. It reeks of little man syndrome, and Ohio State is definitely not a little man. I just shake my head every time somebody uses the term or something like this pops up.
