Sorry to hear that Nate. Not to be a smart ass and not knowing a damn thing about surfing (not much of it in Buffalo) but is it common for a surfer to drown?

I think he might be only the second person to drown at Mavericks (which is in Northern California). They do huge contests there and the waves are monstrous. So it's kind of unusual for that specific spot. But I don't know how common it is for a big wave surfer to drown.
