Standings, schmandings: What's at stake as Nats, Mets meet in D.C.

The good news for the Mets: The schedule heavily favors them the rest of the way. After completing this series in Washington, the Mets do not face another team with a winning record the remainder of the season. The Mets host the Twins (53-90), Braves (55-88) and Phillies (63-80), then complete the season with a trip to Miami (71-72) and Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals and Giants square off in a four-game series beginning Thursday in San Francisco -- building in losses for at least one of the teams. St. Louis also has a pair of series remaining with the NL Central-leading Cubs, while the Giants have a pair of series remaining with the NL West-leading Dodgers.

1st the bad news....the Mets lost tonight..(magnified by yet another one of TC's inexcusable braincramps)

Now the good news...so have the Giants,Cards,Marlins,Pirates & Rockies.

Second costly decision in three days helps undermine Mets

It's been a rough road trip for manager Terry Collins and bench coach Dick Scott. After Rafael Montero walked three batters in the first inning and somehow escaped allowing only two runs, Collins decided not to pinch hit for Montero with two on and two out in the top of the second. What happened when Montero returned to the mound? He allowed a pair of homers -- to Mat Latos and Anthony Rendon. Montero was pulled after 1 2/3 innings, with the Mets trailing 6-1. He had thrown 60 pitches (30 strikes). Collins on Saturday in Atlanta did not pinch run for Wilmer Flores in the eighth. Flores ultimately was thrown out at the plate and injured his shoulder, and the Mets lost in extra innings.

I'll be so happy when TC gets shown the door next season...hopefully sooner... ie: during the off season.
Enough is enough with that clown.
The sooner the better.

Terry Collins expressed the possibility of having Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz piggyback in a start the next time Rafael Montero's spot came up. The Mets can delay that Montero start a few extra days because of an off day on Thursday.

Wilmer Flores will try to bat this afternoon, but he remains out of the lineup because of the neck soreness that first came up when he collided with A.J. Pierzynski at the plate on Saturday in Atlanta.

Rivera's home run lifts Mets past Nationals in 10 innings

WASHINGTON -- T.J. Rivera will not forget his first major league home run anytime soon.

The rookie second baseman belted an 0-2 pitch off Mark Melancon into the left-field seats with one out in the 10th inning to lift the New York Mets to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night.

"All I could do was go up there and try to have a good at-bat," Rivera said. "He left something up and luckily I was able to put the barrel on it. That was pretty much my whole concept, my whole idea for that at-bat was really just compete because I'd never faced him before."

The Mets pulled within nine games of Washington in the NL East and remained a half-game ahead of St. Louis in the NL wild-card race. New York has won eight of its last 10 and is 17-6 since Aug. 20, gaining 3 1/2 games on Washington in that stretch.

Rookie T.J. Rivera rescues Mets in first start since Aug. 23

WASHINGTON -- It took back surgery that ended Neil Walker's season and a neck injury to Wilmer Flores for T.J. Rivera to get into the lineup Tuesday at second base. The rookie then rescued the New York Mets from what would have been a crushing defeat.

Rivera capped a three-hit, three-RBI night with a solo homer in the top of the 10th against Mark Melancon as the Mets salvaged a 4-3 win over theWashington Nationals.

Rivera was starting a major league game for the first time since Aug. 23. He had won the Pacific Coast League batting title in early September before returning upon the completion of Triple-A Las Vegas' season.

Noah Syndergaard racked up his 205th strikeout of the year against the Nationals on Tuesday. He reached 200 in 171 1/3 innings this season. The only Mets pitcher to reach 200 in a season in fewer innings was Dwight Gooden in 1984 (165 2/3 innings, per the Elias Sports Bureau).

Terry Collins said his preference would be to give Noah Syndergaard extra rest rather than bring him back Sunday on regular rest in order to delay the slot that had been occupied by Rafael Montero. Of course, that would necessitate using Jacob deGrom and/or Steven Matz on Sunday against the Twins -- or a non-optimal option that isn't clear. There is no intention of using Montero in the rotation

Steven Matz felt "fine" while throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday, Terry Collins said. Matz threw fastballs and changeups. He is returning from a shoulder impingement.

Here is the Mets lineup for Wednesday's 4:05 p.m. ET rubber game against the Nationals in D.C.:

Jose Reyes – 3B
Asdrubal Cabrera – SS
Yoenis Cespedes – LF
Curtis Granderson – CF
Jay Bruce – RF
T.J. Rivera – 2B
James Loney – 1B
Rene Rivera – C
Robert Gsellman – RHP

:L

TC continually putting Jay (the big K) Bruce in the middle of the lineup is the epitome of insanity.

FFS!!!
Give Conforto some AB's...especially against righties...like today.

Ugghhh...Mets flop in the rubber game...losing 1-0
Thank goodness the Cards & Giants lost too.

I'm also officially done w/ Jay (big K) Bruce.
TC can go take a flying you know what too.

Roark, Ramos lead Nationals to 1-0 win over Mets

Terry Collins offered no indication Jay Bruce is headed for less playing time. "One of the things he's done his entire career is play through things," Collins said. Bruce and Collins spoke Wednesday, and it was noted that Bruce has played less frequently here than with Cincinnati. Collins also indicated you need to have an alternative in which you have confidence in order to justify sitting Bruce -- which seems to indicate where things stand with Michael Conforto.

Wilmer Flores is headed to the doctor on Thursday -- but it's not primarily for his neck. Flores has a hand issue and is unable to swing a bat.

After the visit...Wilmer Flores said his right wrist was hurting, but an initial X-ray in Atlanta showed no fracture. Flores said his neck is good enough to play with.

Robert Gsellman has at least some degree of labrum tear in his non-pitching shoulder. Doctors will wait until after the season to determine whether Gsellman will require surgery. Gsellman has not been swinging the bat at all in Las Vegas or with the Mets, which has made the issue glaring.
