2nd game starts in less than 2 hrs.....could be another 1 of those "wholestaff" outings for the Mets in the nitecap...

Left-hander Jon Lester (0-2, 4.09 ERA) was to start the second game for the Nationals and Robert Gsellman (0-0, 3.65) for the Mets.

Well the Mets go down 1-2-3 in their half of the 1st...
...but in the bottom half, Gsellman gives up a leadoff HR on his 3rd pitch....

Yep...probably gonna be one of those "wholestaff by committee" outings tonight.....

edit:
He got out of the inning with minimal damage...just the hiccup 1 run.

1-0 gNats....heading to the 2nd

Mets drop the nitecap....6-2

Trainer's room....
LHP Joey Lucchesi was put on the 10-day IL with left elbow inflammation, a day after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and will have an MRI. ... OF Albert Almora Jr. was activated from the 10-day IL and started the second game and doubled twice. He had been sidelined since May 11, when he bruised his left shoulder charging into an outfield wall.

Up next....
Mets RHP Taijuan Walker (6-2, 2.12) starts for NY in Sunday's series finale against LHP Patrick Corbin (4-5, 5.60) for the Nationals

Mets trail 3-2 in the 7th.
Rojas brings in Familia to relieve Walker with 1 out and a runner on to face Schwarber (who has already HR'd twice in the game)

Boom...another HR ( his 3rd today)..on Familia's 2nd pitch.

Now the Mets trail 5-2.

Pillar & Alonso have each hit solo shots.

Amazins getting Schwarbed today.

Hopefully Atlanta & Philly both lose later.

Damn....some of the Mets "bench mob" players have really hit a wall..as have a few of the usual starters.
The regulars can't return fast enough from their rehab assignments...+/or injured list.
We badly need reinforcements...and we haven't even hit the AS break yet.
It's a miracle this team is still in 1st place in the NL east.

Final: Nats 5 - Mets 2

*The Mets also optioned RHP Yennsy Diaz back to Syracuse (Triple-A East) just 1 day after recalling him. They also designated LF Mason Williams for assignment and have selected the contract of RHP Jerad Eickhoff from Syracuse.

Up next....
Mets RHP Jacob deGrom (6-2, 0.54) is expected to start the opener of Monday's doubleheader at home against Atlanta, New York's second twin bill in three days.

A healthy, productive McNeil is exactly what this team needs right now.
Exactly.
Nimmo, Conforto & JD Davis are right behind him too...and will be activated soon.
Keep those guys healthy for the 2nd half and it's just like making a trade, or even better...one that really pays off.

That said...major props to the bench mob unit and the farm call ups. They've held down the fort for the last 2 months...but it's apparent they're starting to hit a wall and their overall production has dropped off a bit.

They were a nice and much needed shot in the arm when the regs started getting hurt and shut down.
Now the regs can return the favor.

Jake sets them down in order in the 1st on just 8 pitches (2 K's)
Mets break the seal in their half via "small ball" walk, sac bunt, sac fly and a WP.
We'll take it. Also Braves started LHP Muller, not Anderson

1-0 Mets after 1.
