Phillies claim Mets Jose Bautista off waivers

The Phillies have claimed Mets outfielder Jose Bautista on revocable trade waivers, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo on Monday. MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal was first to report the claim.

The Phillies and Mets are discussing a deal, per Rosenthal, and have until Tuesday to complete it. Teams have until Friday to add postseason-eligible players to their rosters.

If the Phillies and Mets can't come to an agreement on a trade, the Mets can either allow Bautista -- and all the money remaining on his contract -- to go to the Phillies with no return or pull him off waivers.

Bautista signed a one-year deal with the Mets, who were in need of a right-handed bat, in May. After nearly a decade in Toronto, he began the season with the Braves, but played just 12 games for the club before he was released.

The 37-year-old veteran is batting .199/.340/.368 in 94 games this season, but he has hit better with the Mets, sporting a .724 OPS with nine home runs and 37 RBIs in 82 game since joining New York. He's hitting just .163 (13-for-80) through 23 games in August.

Big time matchup tonight on the mound. Lose this one, and we're probably looking at a sweep.

G/L to Bautista, if they can work out a deal.

I think they have a decent shot at winning 2 of the 3 games.
Tonight w/ Thor pitching, & tomorrow w/ Jake on the mound.
For that to happen though the bats really need to show up..and they have to play solid error free D.

But the way this season has gone, Vargas will be the only one to eek out a win on Wednesday in this series.

*We should be able to get a decent mid level prospect for Bautista...or at least a few philly cheese steaks.

Mets had a 1-0 lead in the 1st....Cubs tied it up in the bottom half.

Mets took a 3-1 lead in the top of the 2nd....all good after 2.

Mets went down in order in the top 3rd.

After he gives up a leadoff double..and 2 outs later... he issues a walk, then a WP allows a run to score, then Callaway calls for an IBB, and then of course Thor gives up a 2 out, 2 rbi single to the opposing pitcher.

    Cubs take a 4-3 lead after 3.

    :tsk:

Mets go in order 1-2-3 in the 4th.

    Yes!

Plaw Dawg ties it up in the top of the 7th with a solo HR.

4-4 game at the stretch in the friendly confines.

Blevins relieves Thor to begin the home half.

    Well so much for that...
Blevins gives up b2b doubles right out of the gate.

Cubs retake the lead 5-4...still no outs.

    Ugghhh

And then he gives up a single...

Blevins is replaced by Drew Smith...
    1st & 3rd...no outs.

Smith gets a ground ball out but another run scores.

    6-4 Cubs.

    TRAINER'S ROOM

Mets: 3B David Wright, who hasn't appeared in the majors since May 2016 because of back and shoulder injuries, was off for the second straight day as he continues his rehab stint with Class A St. Lucie. "He just didn't feel comfortable playing three in a row at this point, so he's going get a couple days off and we're going to evaluate where he's at physically," Callaway said. ... 2B Jeff McNeil flied out as a pinch hitter in the seventh after leaving Sunday's 15-0 loss to Washington because of tightness in his right quadriceps. The rookie entered with an 11-game hit streak.

    UP NEXT

Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom (8-8, 1.71 ERA) and Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels (9-9, 3.82 ERA) square off Tuesday night in a matchup between two of baseball's hottest pitchers. DeGrom, one of the leading contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, has a 1.26 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings over five August starts. Hamels is 4-0 with a sparkling 0.79 ERA in five starts since he was acquired in a July 27 trade with Texas.

Metsies put 4 more on the board in the 7th...including a Jose Reyes PH 2 run triple.

    It's now 10-1 in the 9th.
