Jeered last season, Matt Harvey draws cheers in 2017 debut

It was quite an opening series for the New York Mets' pitching staff. Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and the bullpen held Atlanta to five runs in 30 innings as New York took two of three. The Atlanta offense would have been even more ineffectual if not for Matt Kemp, who drove in four of the Braves' five runs.

Terry Collins on Matt Harvey's night: "He didn't try to overthrow, he used all of his pitches and had command of all his pitches. ... Is he going to throw 98 (mph) again? I dunno. But Matt Harvey is pretty good when he's throwing 93-95, and he proved that tonight." Collins had Harvey's pitch-limit at around 85 pitches. He threw 77

Matt Harvey threw 55 of 77 pitches for strikes on Thursday (71%). He had only 1 start last season with a higher strike rate (74% against Rockies in May). He threw 78% strikes with his fastball (tied for 4th-highest of his career). He also threw 33% sliders (highest rate of his career). Braves hitters were 0-for-6 vs that pitch.

Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler is to start Friday's series opener against Miami, his first big league appearance since Sept. 25, 2014. Wheeler injured his elbow pitching against Miami in a spring training game on March 9, 2015, and had surgery 16 days later to repair a torn right ulnar collateral ligament.

Not sure WHAT to expect tonight, but glad to see him finally pitching for us

Wheeler looking all right early

Well there goes that theory...his 1st inning was all adrenaline....he's since been knocked down a bit.

To be honest, I don't think he's quite ready yet....but with Matz & Lugo on the shelf, what are their options?

Maybe the cold windy weather is affecting him too?

Pitch count is rising, his command isn't there yet, and he's allowed 5 earned runs already thru 3.
5-1, Fish.

Jose looks a bit puzzled at the plate....he needs to solve that if he's gonna be hitting leadoff.

It's still early though.

About Wheeler being on par with the other guys...

Looked good first inning hitting 98mph. Velocity dropped quick after that and couldn't command his off speed stuff. Hopefully he gets that stamina back after not really pitching in a real game for 2 years. Being cold and windy probably didn't help with getting a good feel for those secondary pitches.
