Florida International

Preview segment: The Florida International Golden Panthers

Last season: :noidea: I mean, FIU went 0-5 in 2020, but in their defense they got royally f--ked over by the pandemic.

Bad news: Line play is the big worry for FIU, as the run defense has to get better and the O-line is missing some people. There are 3 QB's fighting right now for the starting spot...

Good news: ...but at least each of the QB's have their strong points. And whoever wins the job will have some good skill players to help him run the offense. The secondary looks good, too.

Key games:
9/18 @ Texas Tech (Excluding this game in Lubbock, the non-conference slate is manageable for the Panthers.)
10/2 @ Florida Atlantic (October will determine where FIU goes this season. First will be the annual rivalry game between them and the Owls.)
10/23 vs. Western Kentucky (Later, FIU will host the determined Hilltoppers...)
10/30 @ Marshall (...before they have to visit the strong Thundering Herd.)

Bottom line: The Golden Panthers are SO not going winless this year, but any chance at a bowl berth will depend on which QB they use and if it can get this offense going.

Southern Mississippi

The last preview segment for Conference USA: The Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Last season: The Golden Eagles went a disappointing 3-7 in 2020, but that wasn't the worse part. No, that came when Jay Hopson resigned as coach after an opening loss to South Alabama, and then the team went through 2 (that's right, 2!) interim head coaches. Now fans in Hattiesburg are REALLY hoping that the chaos is over.

2021 X-factor: New head coach Will Hall- This is Will's 1st head coaching job, but the players are already liking his attention to detail. We'll see how well he calms things down here.

Good news: Here to help Will with the transition are 10 returning starters on offense, including workhorse RB Frank Gore Jr. and a good O-line. Linebacker also looks to be a strength.

Bad news: There's not much proven talent as you go down the depth chart at USM, and the QB spot is a bit iffy after last year's starter Jack Abraham transferred and backup Tate Whatley retired.

Key games:
9/4 @ South Alabama (Southern Miss will start the 2021 season by visiting the team that started the entire sad saga of 2020 in Hattiesburg.)
10/2 @ Rice (It would be QUITE an embarrassment for USM if they lost to the lowly Rice Owls... like they did last year.)
10/16 vs. UAB (These two rivals didn't face each other last year. The Golden Eagles are hoping to duplicate the 37-2 beatdown they gave UAB in 2019.)
11/6 vs. North Texas (By this time, we'll know how well Southern Miss's offense is doing.)

Bottom line: For the fans of Southern Miss, I don't think the C-USA West title should be their focus this season. No, instead they should just focus on having a calm year and finding a bowl berth in the process. Here's hoping they find a new QB to make that happen!

Army

Preview segment: The Army Black Knights

Last season: Another rock-solid season for Jeff Monken and crew! The Black Knights went 9-3, took back the Commander-in-Chief's trophy, and gave West Virginia a great fight in their bowl game. And you know the drill by now; Army wants more this season.

Bad news: The defensive line has a lack of depth, and the O-line has a lack of returning starters. Plus, Army has 4 QB's fighting for the starting job.

Good news: However, in an option offense, having too many QB's could be a good thing. Last year's Army defense was the best in the whole country, and the 2021 unit has a lot of starters coming back.

Key games:
10/2 @ Ball State (Looks weird to have Ball State as a "key game" for a good Army team, eh? But remember this: Ball State will be good as well this year.)
10/16 @ Wisconsin (A tough assignment for Army to visit Wisconsin, you say? Well go ask Oklahoma, Michigan, and West Virginia just how tough defeating the Black Knights has gotten over the last few years.)
11/6 vs. Air Force [in Arlington, TX] (Is this part of the "Commander-in-Chief" rivalry series REALLY taking place in "Jerry World"? Sounds rather odd. Oh well, let's see if Army can outmuscle the Falcons again.)
11/27 @ Liberty (More on this game when I preview Liberty later.)
12/11 vs. Navy [in East Rutherford, NJ] (Army now has firm control of their rivalry with Navy, as they have now beaten them 4 of the last 5 years.)

Bottom line: I like Army's chances to return to the postseason with that strong defense of theirs. But anything above that will require Army to put more points up on the scoreboard.

Liberty

Before I start this preview, I just wanna let you know that I'm starting my look at the Mid-American conference tomorrow. Now then...

Preview segment: The Liberty Flames

Last season: For most people in the CFB world, they wanna forget that 2020 ever happened. But for some select teams, they actually took advantage of the pandemic and had a feast.
The Liberty Flames is a prime example of the latter; they had a BALL in 2020 as they went 10-1 and finished #17 in the final AP Poll. And that included wins over Virginia Tech and a undefeated Coastal Carolina squad. In fact, that one loss was at NC State... and it was only by 1 point. Now the million-dollar question for Liberty in 2021 is "What can we do now?".

Good news: Nearly the whole team is back in Lynchburg, including super QB Malik Willis. The O-line is top-shelf good, and the secondary looks nasty.

Bad news: There are some new faces on the D-line, especially at linebacker. Also, god help Liberty's offense if Malik goes down due to injury.

Key games:
9/24 @ Syracuse (Alright, you stupid Flames! I double-dog dare you guys to conquer the Carrier Dome again.)
10/2 @ UAB (Here's a good test for that Liberty offense; UAB's defense always seems to be good.)
11/6 @ Ole Miss (Easily the biggest game Liberty will have all year. If Liberty wants ANY shot at a big-league bowl game, they NEED to beat the Rebels in Oxford.)
11/20 vs. Louisiana (Speaking of tests, here's a good one for Liberty's defense.)
11/27 vs. Army (Ending the season against an option-run team? Not ideal.)

Bottom line: It's official: Hugh Freeze has revived his career here at Liberty, and his squad will be hungry for even more wins and riches in 2021. But the schedule doesn't give them too many chances to make a impact, so it'll be hard for Liberty to make a big-league bowl. I guess they'll be just a BIG "wild-card" team for the 2021 season... and that's just what the Flames want to be.

Kent State

The first preview segment for the Mid-American Conference: The Kent State Golden Flashes

Last season: Another not-bad season for Kent State as they accumulated a lot of points in the MAC. In fact, had they not allowed Jaret Patterson and Buffalo to go hog-wild on them, they could have been in the MAC championship game.

Good news: I wouldn't be surprised if Kent's QB Dustin Crum get taken in the 3rd round by an NFL team and eventually gives them a Lombardi trophy; he's THAT good of a QB. And with a proud O-line protecting him, MAC defenses will be in for a bad time. Transfers should really help Kent out on defense.

Bad news: Sadly, while the transfer portal giveth, the portal taketh away; Kent lost a pretty good kicker in the spring. There's also not a go-to WR for Kent at the moment.

Key games:
9/4 @ Texas A&M (It's back to the hard non-conference slates for the MAC, as Kent will also deal with Iowa and Maryland. But at least NFL scouts will be looking at Crum during this season opener.)
10/9 vs. Buffalo (The Bulls do not have Jaret Patterson anymore, but Kent knows better. They know that this will be a chance for payback.)
10/23 @ Ohio (Any chance that Kent will have at the MAC East title will depend on them defeating Ohio for the first time since 2013.)
11/27 vs. Miami-Ohio (Dix Stadium should be jam-packed to see Dustin Crum say goodbye. I hate to be the Redhawk defense here.)

Bottom line: If Kent wants a postseason berth in 2021, they gotta get help for Dustin Crum in the passing game and hope that the defense can get better. If they can defeat either Buffalo or Ohio, I like their chances.

Miami-Ohio

Preview segment: The Miami-Ohio Redhawks

Last season: :noidea:

Good news: Most of the top offensive players are back, including QB Brett Gabbert and some battle-tested WR's. Defensive end should be a position of strength.

Bad news: Line play could be a problem with the defensive interior shaky and the offense missing NFL Draft choice Tommy O'Doyle.

Key games:
9/4 @ Cincinnati (Oof. This may be the most lopsided "Battle for the Victory Ball" contest in the rivalry's history. Can Brett Gabbert put together some magic?)
10/2 vs. Central Michigan (This conference opener will be a good "barometer game" for the Redhawks in the MAC.)
10/23 @ Ball State (Miami-Ohio gave Ball State it's only loss of the 2020 season.)
11/2 @ Ohio (Such a shame. We didn't get the "Battle for the Bricks" last year, and it would had been fun to see Miami-Ohio beat the Bobcats for the 3rd straight year.)
11/9 vs. Buffalo (Another tough assignment for the Redhawks. But hey! At least Buffalo won't be as good as last year.)

Bottom line: With some good pieces returning and Buffalo due to trend downwards, maybe Miami-Ohio can be a contender for the MAC title again this season. That 3-game stretch against Ball State, Ohio, and Buffalo will tell the tale of how this journey goes in 2021.

Bowling Green

Preview segment: The Bowling Green Falcons

Last season: A tough 0-5.

Good news: The running game has a chance to carry the offense, and the defense has a lot of motivated and young players.

Bad news: No, I mean REALLY young players; the coaching staff is trying to rebuild this program from the ground up. Not easy to do when the starting QB spot is up for grabs.

Key games:
9/11 vs. South Alabama (Here's a chance for that young defense to get some positive vibes.)
10/9 vs. Akron (A winnable game that the Falcons should take advantage of.)
10/16 @ Northern Illinois (Another winnable game.)

Bottom line: As I already mentioned, Scot Loeffler and his staff are rebuilding the Bowling Green program completely. So in 2021, it's best to just ignore them and leave them to their work.

Toledo

Preview segment: The Toledo Rockets

Last season: Toledo did get better as the season progressed, and they finished 4-2.

Bad news: When Eli Peters called it quits on football (due to him having sustained some injuries), it left a BIG hole at the quarterback spot for the Rockets. And there are currently 4 QB's competing for that starting job right now.

Good news: Other than that, everything looks good. The defense will be deep and nasty, and the skill positions on offense looks good. Toledo even has a good punter that can flip the field easily.

Key games:
9/11 @ Notre Dame (It's Toledo's first-ever game against the Fighting Irish! Hmm, what will happen if Toledo's offense runs well here?)
9/25 @ Ball State (The game against Notre Dame will be a fun test. The game against Ball State will be serious business, as the winner will get a BIG early lead in the MAC West race.)
10/23 vs. Western Michigan (Last year's game between these two was amazing! ...But the Rockets lost it 41-38, so you know they'll be up for this one.)
11/16 @ Ohio (A potential preview of the MAC championship game? Perhaps.)

Bottom line: Toledo is LOADED and ready to have a fine year thanks to their proud defense. But I'll bet their #1 goal in 2021 is to dethrone Ball State and win the MAC title. Hopefully the Rockets will have a new QB up and running by the time September 25th rolls around.

Eastern Michigan

Preview segment: The Eastern Michigan Eagles

Last season: A rough 2-4. Some people in the MAC said that it was a big step backwards for this program. I guess we'll have to see.

Good news: The secondary should be better than it was last year, and the O-line returns all of it's starters from 2020. The Eagles might have 2 QB's angling for the starting spot, but I actually think they can win with either Preston Hutchinson or transfer Ben Bryant at the helm.

Bad news: However, they will need to find some playmakers at RB and WR. The run defense was s--t for EMU last year, and I'm not expecting a big improvement there.

Key games:
9/11 @ Wisconsin (Call me nuts, but I think this is the only "impossible" game for EMU this season.)
10/9 vs. Miami-Ohio (The Eagles are only 5-19 all-time against Miami-Ohio, but they DID beat them the last time they played in 2017.)
10/16 vs. Ball State (Keep trying, Eastern Michigan! You almost got the Cardinals last year in Muncie.)
11/16 vs. Western Michigan (Easily the best moment for EMU in 2020 was upsetting an undefeated Broncos team in Kalamazoo 53-42.)
11/26 @ Central Michigan (And of course, we can't forget this one.)

Bottom line: Excluding that game at Wisconsin, the schedule's very good for the Eagles in 2021. So they DO have a chance to get back to the postseason... IF they fix their problems.

Ball State

Preview segment: The Ball State Cardinals

Last season: Sometimes when it comes to creativity, it comes like this: Nothing... nothing... and then POOF! That is now Mike Neu's tenure at Ball State. He was just building it up slowly, and then in 2020 it all came together. They would take the MAC West, then upset unbeaten Buffalo to win the conference (Kinda like 2008, only in reverse).
And for the topper, Ball State then beat Mountain West champ San Jose State in a bowl to finish #23 in the final AP Poll. Now with the full 12-game schedule coming back, people in Muncie are wondering what'll come next.

Good news: The experience Ball State has on offense is just ridiculous; QB Drew Platt throwing to good WR's sounds like a nightmare to MAC teams. LB Brandon Martin leads a great back-7 on the Cardinals defense.

Bad news: That defense COULD stand to do better at rushing the passer, though. The O-line also could do better in protecting Platt.

Key games:
9/11 @ Penn State (It's the 1st-ever meeting between these two teams. And if Ball State somehow stuns the Nittany Lions, OH the possibilities!)
9/25 vs. Toledo (A showcase game on the early part of the MAC calendar. Ball State was able to win at Toledo last year, and guess what happened next for them?)
10/9 @ Western Michigan (The Broncos have talent, too, so Ball State might wanna be careful here.)
10/16 vs. Miami-Ohio (A potential preview of the MAC title game.)
11/23 vs. Buffalo (How big this game is will depend on how well the Bulls are doing, but this should be an exciting Senior Day game.)

Bottom line: Opinions on this team are all over the place; Lindy's has them as a clear favorite to win the MAC, while Athlon Sports has them getting squeaked out by Toledo in the West. Regardless, Ball State is going into 2021 with expectations, which is a rarity.
But they have the experience to deal with it. All the Cardinals have to do is fix some simple problems, and maybe they CAN repeat as conference champs.

Ohio

Preview segment: The Ohio Bobcats

Last season: :noidea:

Bad news: The D-line took some severe losses in the offseason, and the offense could go south if QB Kurtis Rourke struggles.

Good news: RB De'Montre Tuggle has the talent to be the best runner in the MAC, and at least that defense has a lot of upperclassmen.

2021 X-factor: Transfer QB Armani Rodgers- Armani got a chance to run the offense in the spring while Kurtis was off having shoulder surgery. Hmmm... if Kurtis Rourke struggles, maybe Rodgers should come in and steer the ship.

Key games:
9/4 vs. Syracuse (This could be a statement win for the Bobcats... IF their offense is ready.)
10/16 @ Buffalo (We didn't get this game last year, and it's a shame; Ohio could have stolen the East division from the Bulls. Oh well, at least Ohio can try again this year in UB Stadium.)
11/2 vs. Miami-Ohio (The conference slate is pretty good for Ohio, as they'll get to host the rival Redhawks...)
11/16 vs. Toledo (...AND the rival Rockets in Athens.)

Bottom line: Sorry if I sounded boring, but I think the MAC East is Ohio's to lose in 2021. The only thing the coaching staff has to do is keep the QB spot running well, and the Bobcats will overcome Miami-Ohio and Buffalo to get to Detroit.

Akron

Preview segment: The Akron Zips

Last season: A tough 1-5 mark.

Good news: Hooray! QB Kato Nelson is back for one more year. That is great news for RB Teon Dollard, who doesn't have to carry the offense by himself anymore. The O-line returns a lot of key pieces, too.

Bad news: The defense could unravel thanks to a lack of depth, especially on the D-line.

Key games:
9/11 vs. Temple (Ignore those tough road trips to Auburn and Ohio State that the Zips must do. THIS is the early barometer game for Akron to see how good they could be this season.)
10/2 vs. Ohio (Here's hoping that the Zips defense can find a way to stop the Bobcats.)
10/9 @ Bowling Green (At least Akron was able to beat Bowling Green last year.)
11/20 vs. Kent State (In last year's "Battle For the Wagon Wheel", Akron gave up 69 points to Dustin Crum and Kent State. Needless to say, the Zips will be determined not to let that happen again.)

Bottom line: After flirting with the L.A. Chargers in the offseason, coach Tom Arth decided to stay put here in Akron. That's a good first step for a team that looks to continue making improvements. Akron should be better again in 2021, but it might not show up on the record thanks to a tough schedule.

Northern Illinois

Preview segment: The Northern Illinois Huskies

Last season: It might not have been a full sample, but the 2020 season was still cause for alarm at Northern Illinois. I mean, this is a program that won 86 games from 2010 to 2018. And they're now coming off an 0-6 record? Uh, does coach Hammock know what he's doing?

Good news: The D-line shows good promise, and Rocky Lombardi is now the new starting QB after a strong showing at spring ball.

Bad news: Inexperienced players dot the entire roster, especially at the secondary (which is a major concern).

2021 X-factor: The offensive line- This part of the team is also young, but it does return 4 starters from last season. NIU needs to run the football to do well this year, so let's see if the O-line holds it together.

Key games:
9/11 vs. Wyoming (Much like Akron, NIU has two rough road trips in September against "Power 5" teams [Georgia Tech and Michigan]. And also like Akron, NIU will treat this game as a early barometer for the season.)
10/2 vs. Eastern Michigan (A good start in-conference is essential for this young squad in Dekalb.)
11/10 vs. Ball State (Lost in that 0-6 record was the fact that the Huskies kept it close against rival Ball State in Muncie.)
11/23 vs. Western Michigan (NIU also kept it close against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.)

Bottom line: The CFB magazines are calling this season a critical one for Northern Illinois; the coaching staff has to prove that their familiarity with the school and the recruiting base can produce results. Not finishing last in the crowded MAC West will be a good start, and if the defense gets better...

Western Michigan

Preview segment: The Western Michigan Broncos

Last season: It actually was pretty good to start with. But then 2 straight losses to Eastern Michigan and Ball State meant there would be no postseason for the Broncos.

Good news: During last season, Kaleb Eleby emerged as a strong QB that'll probably lead the Broncos to greatness. And even better for him, his O-line returns almost intact. The defense has some good wide bodies coming back as well.

Bad news: WMU will be missing some key players from last year, like leading receiver D'Wayne Eskridge and ballhawk linebacker Treshaun Hayward.

Key games:
9/4 @ Michigan (A simple "payday game" where WMU will get smoked, or a chance for Kaleb Eleby to become a household name? How well Kaleb attacks the Michigan defense will give us the answer.)
The entire October slate (A copout? Maybe. But Western Michigan's dance card is LOADED in October. They'll visit Buffalo, host conference champ Ball State, have a QB duel with Dustin Crum and Kent State, and finally visit Toledo [who also wants the MAC title]. Man, this is gonna be FUN for WMU to deal with.)
11/16 @ Eastern Michigan (Can't forget this one. A 4-0 start for WMU died thanks to the Eagles stunning them 53-42 at home.)

Bottom line: The schedule looks rough, but thankfully for the Broncos they've got a team that can handle it. A bowl berth looks likely, and we'll see how far they can go if they win most of their games in October.

Buffalo

Preview segment: The Buffalo Bulls

Last season: Well done, Buffalo! Despite only playing 7 games, an incredible running game helped you guys finish the year with your first-ever AP Poll ranking! Now people are really taking you guys seriously in the MAC.

Bad news: Trouble is, mid-major coaches who get that type of success usually don't hang around. So now Lance Leipold is gone to try and fix Kansas, and the Bulls must learn how to cope. As for the team, Jaret Patterson (who's now with NFL Washington) and go-to receiver Antonio Nunn is gone, and there's uncertainty in the secondary.

Good news: Maybe Kevin Marks can fill in for Patterson in the running game, what with the O-line remaining strong and all. QB Kyle Vantrease is back for one more year, and the run defense still looks very good.

Key games:
9/18 vs. Coastal Carolina (Who would have thought that BOTH of these teams would finish in the final rankings last year? As for 2021, just know that Buffalo wants to surprise a team that's thinking REAL big things.)
10/9 @ Kent State (Hey, hey! Bulls! Remember when you ran all over Kent State to win the East division last year? Kent certainly does.)
10/16 vs. Ohio (Maybe the biggest conference game Buffalo will have this year. They didn't play Ohio last year, but they'll need to beat the Bobcats this year to keep their division title.)
11/9 @ Miami-Ohio (Oh, and Miami-Ohio will also remember how Buffalo smashed them last year 42-10.)
11/23 @ Ball State (Last year's MAC title game had Ball State beating the Bulls. And here in Muncie, Buffalo will want revenge... and maybe set up a rematch in Detroit. Or maybe... ruin it completely for the Cardinals.)

Bottom line: Despite losing coach Leipold, the Bulls are optimistic that they can keep going and defend their MAC title, continuing the best run of football success they've ever had. A bowl berth looks certain for Buffalo, but anything above that will depend on them overcoming big personnel losses.

Central Michigan

The last preview segment for the MAC: The Central Michigan Chippewas

Last season: A pretty blah 3-3.

Good news: CMU has a dynamic duo at the RB spot (Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols III), and the kicking game is the best in the conference.

Bad news: The Chippewas secondary got burned over and over again last year, and early trips to Missouri and LSU will not help it build confidence. The QB spot looks to be up for grabs.

2021 X-factor: QB Daniel Richardson- Daniel started a few games for CMU last year and did OK before he exited with a leg injury. If he comes back and improves, maybe the QB spot will be fine.

Key games:
9/25 vs. Florida International (After those tough trips to SEC country, this home game against the Golden Panthers will determine how well CMU can recover.)
10/16 vs. Toledo (After consecutive road games against Miami-Ohio and Ohio, CMU gets to go home and host the Rockets in a key MAC West game.)
11/3 @ Western Michigan (Can't forget this rivalry game! The Broncos held off the Chippewas last year 52-44.)
11/17 @ Ball State (This series is all even at 26 wins apiece.)

Bottom line: Central Michigan could be the wild-card of the MAC this season. They have most of the tools to compete in the conference, but they could also tumble in the strong MAC West division. Fixing the pass defense and securing the starting QB will be key for Jim McElwain and his squad to stay upright in the chase.

MAC Predictions:

MAC East:

1. Miami-Ohio
2. Buffalo
3. Ohio
4. Kent State
5. Akron
6. Bowling Green

MAC West:
1. Ball State (Conference champs)
2. Toledo
3. Western Michigan
4. Central Michigan
5. Eastern Michigan
6. Northern Illinois

Now for tomorrow's slate, I'm gonna do something weird. First I'll go to the West coast to look at BYU, then start up the American previews with Houston.

11/2 @ Ohio (Such a shame. We didn't get the "Battle for the Bricks" last year, and it would had been fun to see Miami-Ohio beat the Bobcats for the 3rd straight year.)

Well, it WOULD had been the 3rd straight year had they played. Maybe I should have said for the 3rd straight time.
