I dunno, I think the plan in Buffalo is to mount a playoff challenge this year. I think they'll take money, but they want quality coming over. With the guys who were already around a year older, and with Evander Kane and Eichel now on board, I think it's a realistic goal.I wonder if Buffalo is prepared to take on some ugly contracts in exchange for a few future draft picks.
They've only got ~$44M committed so far, with (I think) 9 forwards, 5 D, and 1 G under contract. Potential buyout of CoHo ( ) opens up even more space. Jack Eichel gets rookie max and a few of the RFAs get a slight bump, possibly a pickup or two in UFA, leaves them looking at a TON of cap space.
And unlike some of the other cap-happy teams (NSH & AZ being the only ones with more) they've got an owner with really deep pockets.
Wouldn't be surprised if Tim Murray is getting some calls out of Boston and Chicago.
I think a lot may hinge on whether Eichel goes pro or not. I think he will, but he seems to be playing it a bit coy lately.I dunno, I think the plan in Buffalo is to mount a playoff challenge this year. Maybe Looch will be doing this in a Sabres uni next time?I think a lot may hinge on whether Eichel goes pro or not. I think he will, but he seems to be playing it a bit coy lately.
I think Murray definitely answers when a 312 or 617 area code pops up on his phone though and at least listens to what they have to say.
I would expect something to happen. Shanny seems to have the team headed in the right overall direction ATM rather than buying into the "we're *THIS* close" mentality that his recent predecessors have had.The Leafs' current cap hit is $54.3 mil. If they move Kessel (without eating $$$) and Phaneuf (eating, say, $2m) that number is down to $41.3 mil; if they manage to move both Bozak and Lupul with full value it goes down to about $31.9 mil. Say both Kadri and Bernier sign for $4 mil and they're still under $40 mil with 5 forward spots open, 1-2 defence spots open and $36.4 million in cap space open with Horton's exemption.
If these guys can't make some moves and eat some contracts for picks by the end of the week I'll be pissed.

Undoubtedly, I'm just more concerned on how well he can sell some things and how stubborn he's being on holding some of the wages of the guys he's trying to trade. For example I mentioned Lupul but even Lowe wouldn't have taken that contract on, but eat a million a year? Does that really hurt the Leafs over the next 3 years? Does a GM think a $4 million Lupul who's actually played in 75% of games in the past 2 seasons is worth a flier? Maybe. Does eating a mil of Kessel's deal entitle the Leafs to maybe an additional first rounder or good prospect in a deal? Probably. Things like that. I hope he gets creative and isn't concerned about the cap in 3 years time because there's little to no chance the Leafs are anywhere near it unless they decide to go full-on Burke/Nonis and start spending money on shitty UFA's again.I would expect something to happen. I think I saw that the Hawks have 8 million of cap space remaining with 13 players signed for next season. Some guys will need to be moved.
any chance he can do it in practice to his new sabres teammate Ryan Miller ?
