NHL to abandon pre-OT dry scrape this weekend

I for one was fine with ties. Then in the 2000's the NHL went off the deep end. The shoot out. The bane of my existence. 4 in 4 over time. Now they are talking about adding a 3 on 3 in between the 4 on 4 and the shoot out. Now I know the NHL, is looking for a way to attract more of the casual fan. But I doubt that these fans are idiots.
Look please stop. Stop before you have just 2 goalies out there throwing the puck at each other. You passed the rule that goalies can't handle the puck outside the whatever-the-name-of-that-shape, than you made it bigger. The NHL has shrunk the foaled by making the equipment smaller. You've gotten rid of the 2 line pass. All good ideas that kept the gimmicks out. Now this is turning into a circus. Please stop. For the love of winter, stop.
And don't get me started on the Overtime Loss point.

Ok I'm done ranting. You may return to your own lives.

They are getting rid of the dry scrape before overtime because it's taking too long and the players (along with their union) are complaining. Plus so far it hasn't aided any more games ending in OT. Still getting more shootouts than the league wants due to fans blah attitude towards the shootout in a lot of arenas. Mostly Canada and the Northeast I would imagine. I don't see anbody leaving Staples Center before the shootout so I'm guessing it's still popular in LA.

But I'm with you on the ties. I never had a complaint about giving both teams a point after 65 hard fought minutes of hockey that ended up even. I do have a strong objection to the 3-point games. Every game should be worth the same number of points.

First off, the fact that we read stuff here proves we have no life.
3 on 3 hockey sounds stupid, but I haven't seen it.

Apparently it's being tried out in the AHL. I'm sure if you google it, a video should pop up.

And I have been sick for the last two days. So yes I had no life and I read about hockey.

Ox, another things that has been bandied about is going to a 3 point system, like soccer.
3 points for a regulation win.
2 points for an OT win.
1 point for an OT loss.
0 points for a regation loss.

Yeah but I think most of that talk has come from fans and the "talking heads" on TV. I can't remember it ever getting any serious discussion at a General Managers or Rules Committee meeting. Makes too much sense for the NHL to consider it I guess.

3 point just doesnt really do much besides inflate numbers. There is a site that has all the different systems and how it would affect the standings last year and none of them really made any impact on how the standings finished.

3 on 3 is actually doing pretty well in the AHL this year. A lot of games are ending in OT instead of going to the shoot out.

I still don't think a team losing in OT should get a point. Never did before the stupid shootout came into being. Supposedly it's so teams wouldn't just lay back in OT and try to get to the shootout to earn the "loser point". Shoot if you must have a winner and a loser just go to a wins vs losses system like every other sport uses.

Totally agree OX. That is the crux of the problem. A team that looses does not deserve the point. Just like you said, back in the day when a team lost in overtime, they DIS NOT GET A POINT.

Or just like the wise OX has already stated, get rid of the point system all together and just count wins an losses. But that means OT could go on for a very long time. MLB has extra innings, NBA has been known to have triple OT. Fans love it. But the Union will not go for that, because the players would not be compensated for the extra play. Than do it like in NFL, sudden death. First team to score wins. Keep it to 3 minute periods in OT

They don't have to go to the playoff style overtimes. Like you said the schedule and the Players Union would never go for it anyways. Leave it the way it is but if you lose whether it be in OT or a shootout it's a loss and if you win it's a win.
