Flipping through the channels and landing on Around The Horn. According to two panelists, the NHL has caught players using PEDs. My question is, who? My fiance and I both can't think of anyone. Did we miss the news story or is ESPN just trashing hockey again?

Andrew Peters was caught. Look how good PEDs made him!!

Sean Hill was caught also.

Those are the only two that I can remember off of the top of my head.

There have been a few that have been caught abusing certain substances, but none of them would be considered necessarily performance enhancing, right Bob Probert?

I thought maybe Chris Simon had been suspended for it, but wasn't able to find it. Somehow missed Berard, though - Know Your CBA: Performance Enhancing Drugs - Mile High Hockey

The thing about hockey is brute strength really doesn't help you. Maybe using things like HGH to recover from injury would, but using a steroid to bulk up will really do nothing but make you slow. Not the steroid, the bulk.

Ah ok, must have missed it then.

Thats exactly why I figured roids or any PED wouldn't be a wise choice.

Ray Emery almost certainly took steroids; avascular necrosis is a pretty big red flag. His past behaviour certainly doesn't help his case either.

I know Matt Barnaby took them. Are we really surprised?

I think there are quite a few guys who'll do a cycle of steroids in the summer (avoid testing). I don't think it's widespread but I'm pretty sure it's out there.

It's certainly not rampant in hockey and I'm not sure it would help most players. Most of these guys are strong but not freakishly so. They rely on balance, skill and agility to maximize their strength. Steroids will not help you improve your edge work. Colton Orr could mainline steroids through a constant IV drip and he'd still get knocked over ten times more easily than smaller players like Peter Forsberg, Henrik Zetterberg, Sydney Crosby and Martin St.Louis. Those guys just have great balance and know how and when to set their edges.

I could be wrong, but Brodeur, Jagr, Lidstrom, Chelios playing until he was 46, Teemu, Alfie, all playing top tier hockey when they should be retired, certainly has to at least cause some suspicion. Steroids would do nothing, but HGH would be ideal for hockey.

That's true but you have to keep in mind that PEDs are not the only big medical advancements when it comes to performance and longevity (career-wise). Fitness, nutrition and improved surgical methods are helping players stay healthy for longer.

When you compare these things to what they were in the 80s, and even 90s, it's like night and day.

Nobody has ever questioned Teemu's work ethic. He outworks the younger guys on the Ducks on a daily basis. I would be shocked if he took anything & very disappointed.

Imo the oldies in the nhl are doing it based on clean living, intelligence and guile

With the exception of teemu the oldies are a shadow of their former selves as players

Age is catching up to them but they have the smarts to stay in the game

You look at Dr Recchi in his final year. Slow as shit but still productive because he was able to bring the pace of the game down to his level on alot of shifts

Of course i cant say 100% that none of the oldies use peds

Just my shap
