Next year’s team:
Williams is obvious leader, but who on this list can take over a game????
PG:
· Paige, sr. Averaged 13 minutes a game. Had 10 starts. Decent 3pt shooter. Not great but decent. Not a good FT shooter. He is not a distributor. Had a negative assist to turnover ratio. Had 37 steals.
· Phillip, so. Averaged 13 a game as well. Good shooter from the field unless he is shooting 3pt’ers. Made just 6 of those all year. Also a poor distributer. Had 38 steas.
· Boldon, fr. 27th ranked PG. Under 6 foot. More of a scoring PG.
SG:
· Carter, so. 3rd on the team in scoring. Led the team in steals with 67 steals. Streaky player. Didn’t have the best shooting percentages but could catch on fire for stretches. Had more assists than turnovers. It’s possible he could end up playing PG.
· Miles, so. 38 steals. Decent 3pt shooter. Not a good FT shooter. Started all 35 games. More assists than turnovers. But a player that could disappear in games. That being said he does have some upside.
· Myers, jr. Averaged 25 points and shot 45% from the field at the JUCO level. Some listed him as a top-5 JUCO player. But he is just about 6-1 or 6-2.
· Conner, jr. Walk-on shooting specialist. Hit more 3’s than Holton, Phillip, Adrian, and BillyDee. Not deadly accurate but competent. Complete defensive liability but he did have 11 steals in 122 minutes. Watkins and BillyDee had a combined 9 in 285 minutes.
SF:
· Ahmad, fr. 8th ranked SF in the country. Supposed to a be a good rebounder for a SF but needs to improve his ball handling. That sounds to similar to Holton and Billy Dee.
· BillyDee, sr. Season started off bad with a facial fracture. Never really caught up. Played in just 18 games and didn’t shoot as advertised. He is athletic. He is one of the few guys on the team that could be a 6-6 perimeter defender. This is a guy that could make a big leap from season 1 to season 2 after coming in from a JUCO. Or he could be a complete non factor. Attempted 1 FT all year.
F:
· Holton, sr. The team plays better when he is on the floor. Has to stay out of foul trouble. Led the team in blocked shots, 2nd in steals, and 2nd in rebounds. Led the team in offensive rebounds. He actually had more offensive boards than defensive. Averaged 7.5 points. Those numbers would go up if he stayed out of foul trouble. He could be the focus of the offense if he could do two things. First, improve his ball handling so he can get to the rim. Second, get his 3pt % up from 20% to 35%.
· Adrian, jr. Good passer for a big guy. Gets steals. But he regressed so much offensively that he was not even attempting shots at the end of the year. Just over 30% from the field and just 17% from 3pt land. Averaged less than 0.5 free throws made per game. Doesn’t rebound well. He needs to at least play like he did as a freshman or he will ride the pine next year. If nothing else, put on some muscle and be a Cam Thoroughman hustle guy. Get under the other teams’ skin. Something.
PF:
· Williams, jr. Averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds. He is consistent and he plays hard. But he is a below the rim player because he is shorter than his listed 6-9 and can’t jump at all. But he uses his thickness to bully defenders and he draws fouls. He is not a shot blocking threat. I would like to see him be more consistent with that 17 footer he has to space out the defense.
· Macon, so. Sat out his first year with injuries and eligibility issue. He brings some size. Still raw. Really no offensive game other than put backs. His overall game needs to improve. If it does then he has the chance to go up from just 13 a game. Game is a little similar to Williams. Got to the line in limited minutes. Needs to knock down the FT though. Just a 51% shooter from the line.
· Watkins, jr. Missed the beginning of the season with an illness. Played in 23 of 35 games. Just 7 minutes a game. One of the better shot blockers on the game but I’m not sure about his basketball IQ because he doesn’t play good team defense and screws up the offensive flow. Only made 6 FT all year.
