planning on going to a wedding down there at the end of Sept.

hopefully things are more normal by then, but to be determined.

anyways, the reception is at Broussard's in French Quarter.

does it matter where I stay? I have found a couple deals on Travelzoo that look good to me.

anything I should avoid?

They used to say avoid the French quarter late at night we as it can be rough, but that was 32 years ago

I realize it is an old thread, but I suppose it is worth commenting on in case anyone else looks at it for insights. New Orleans is generally known as not being a "safe" city. Most parts of New Orleans have moderate to high crime. If most of his activity will be in the French quarter, he is much better off staying in that area for easy access (not to mention that is where you can find most of the worthwhile nightlife activity).

I was in the French Quarter many years before the dam broke and buried them in water - I probably have pictures of the town of places that no longer exist - I think it used to be home of the Marie Lavoe - the voodoo woman. Fascinating place, but not an area that I would be willing to spend the night - LOL

oh man, this brings back memories.

wedding was in the middle of the first COVID peak and NOTHING was open and no live music anywhere. What a bummer.

The wedding was great and we broke all the COVID rules and no one got sick!

but I wouldn't mind going back and getting a better New Orleans experience out of it.

It is worth your time. The bars and nightlife on Bourbon Street are unlike anything else. Some advice though:

1. Avoid visiting in July or August because everywhere you walk during the day, you will feel like you are inside of an oven, and you will sweat like a pig all the time.
2. The hustlers in the streets of the French quarter are very persistent. If anyone tells you they will bet you $5 they know where you "got" your shoes, just reply "I got them in New Orleans" and walk away.

Two guys tried it on me, and I stuffed both of them because I happened to see a video of it online before traveling.
