He preaches the importance of working with free weights instead of machines, and is instituting Olympic-style weightlifting programs. That means clean-and-jerks, snatches, squats, presses and other exercises that provide more of a full-body workout.

Speaking on Clark’s approach, which he now shares, Gruden said last week, “It’s our belief that you don’t play football on a machine or sitting down on a chair. Everything is going to be standing up, so a lot of those exercises are done standing up, squats and cleans and all those things will be beneficial to players.”
