I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about the 2011 World Series, and I told him that I remember watching Game 6 (but not Game 7) livd and that I couldn't believe that the Rangers were 1 strike away from winning the World Series with two different batters and ended up losing the series. And then I was talking about how I couldn't believe Cruz didn't catch that ball in right field and he says "Yeah, Cruz was never really meant to play the field in the National League. He's top 10 all time at injecting roids and smashing homers, but the Rangers were dumb for counting on him to actually play defense."

Which got me thinking- is Nelson Cruz top 10 all-time at injecting steroids and smashing home runs? The phrase "injecting steroids and smashing home runs" in this context means the player is chiefly remembered for using steroids to become physically huge and then hitting mammoth, tape-measure home runs thereafter, but not doing much else in their career.

For example, I don't think either A-Rod or Ryan Braun counts because they were actually decent/good fielders, baserunners, OBP guys, and both may or may not have had good power before steroids.

The one exception I'll personally make is Bonds. I know he was great at a lot of things beforehand, but his prowess at hitting bombs after roids was (outside of maybe Ruth) completely unprecedented and deserves commemoration.

So, does Nelly make your top 10 all-time at injecting steroids and smashing home runs?

Brady Anderson being absent invalidates a list.

Miguel Tejada and Giambi and most of thatMoneyball lineup also deserve credit for numbers beyond their abilities.

This, the only reason Bonds and McGwire get a bad rap is because Brady Anderson went from a fringe starter to an all star. Outside of him it didn’t turn average players into stars.

2011 was the best World Series I’ve ever seen. How dare you insult anything to do with it

That's a pretty good list. But why is Nelson Cruz still hitting 40 home runs?

I don't think he was ever caught but Albert Belle's numbers were off the charts.

Yeah, if "roid rage" is a real thing, it seems like that guy would be exhibit A.

I wanted to include "Nails", but I'll save him for the "sprinkling steroids on his corn flakes and smashing doubles" thread

I would argue Brian Giles also but he did sustain it a few years longer.

If Baseball players were mobsters, Brady Anderson would be the guy that bought his wife a fur coat and a Cadillac 2 days after the Lufthansa heist

Bonds hated the attention Big Mac and Sosa garnered for their HR chase (despite being a vastly better player than either or them).

He changed that (and his hat size) pretty quickly.
