Too Soon to have moved to a P5 coaching job for 2018?

Who may have whiffed on not giving this guy a chance after last season? At $800,000/yr as Troy's HC, it seems he'd have been a good value gamble some places.

2017 Coaching Changes.........Arizona (Kevin Sumlin), Arizona St (Herm Edwards), Arkansas (Chad Morris), Florida (Dan Mullen), Florida St (Willie Taggart), Mississippi St (Joe Moorhead), Nebraska (Scott Frost), Ole Miss (Matt Luke), Oregon (Mario Cristobal), Oregon St (Jonathan Smith), Tennessee (Jeremy Pruitt), Texas A&M (Jimbo Fisher), UCLA (Chip Kelly).

How about this season if he's rolls to double digit wins again?

2018 Pressure's Mounting/Warm/Hot Seats....

Boston College (Steve Addazio), BYU (Kalani Sitake), Colorado (Mike MacIntyre), GA Tech (Paul Johnson), Hawaii (Nick Rolovich), Illinois (Lovie Smith), Kansas (David Beaty), Kentucky (Mark Stoops), LSU (Ed Orgeron), Maryland (DJ Durkin), Missouri (Barry Odom), North Carolina (Larry Fedora), Rutgers (Chris Ash), Texas Tech (Kliff Kingsbury), Vanderbilt (Derek Mason).

If he is going to be successful at the next level, another year of experience at Troy will only help him.

People place way to small a value on experience when it comes to hiring coaches. Far more often than not, that bites them on the collective backside.

I would add one other item to your list that people don't put a great
deal of premium on when elevating someone..."Time Management."

The more visible the program the less time the HC has to
concentrate on coaching.

If you cannot manage your time/delegate you better stay right
where you are.

You can live a pretty good lifestyle in Dothan/Troy, Alabama on
800k a year. Much better than drawing unemployment in Lawrence, Kansas.

Likely half of those coaches hired for 2018 will not have success in their new jobs over the next five years. The new norm is to extend 4 or 5 year deals one year at a time so they are always on 5 year contracts. When you finally have to fire them you owe them 5 years.
Catching elite coaches of the Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Dabo Sweeny, variety are few and far between. Two of those coaches hired last year were coordinators promoted with zero head coaching experience.
Brian Kelly at Notre Dame was on the hot seat last season and managed to buy himself another year.

Neal Brown didn't inherit a successful program and merely maintain it. He turned it around after one year. I'm surprised he didn't hit anyone's radar for a reasonable $2,000,000/yr.

Point is probably 80% of all new head coaches are gambles.

Brady Hoke would like to say hello.

Not sure your point.

Hoke went (4-8) and (9-4) at San Diego St before Michigan gave him millions.
He was a 5 year failure at Ball St. prior to one good season.

Bill Callahan, Bo Pelini, and Mike Riley all give multi-million dollar waves back.

Much better than drawing unemployment in Lawrence, Kansas.

I don't know, there are a couple of former residents of Lawrence that don't look like they are starving to death.

Grats to WVU. I think you traded up. There's already a decent foundation there and he won't be starting from scratch like he did at Troy.

I agree 100%, we upgraded at HC by running Holgorsen off.
Brown has to make it happen on the field and that may take a few years to get all of his pieces in place but so far... night and day difference.

I don't think it will take that long.
