When talking about the history of the Utah Jazz, most would bring up Stockton and Malone. However, it’s their supporting cast that goes easily. In nearly two decades of the Stockton/Malone era, perhaps the most valuable supporting cast member was Thurl Bailey, an old-day stretch power forward who also played a lot of small forward to accommodate the Mailman.

Having led NCAA Champion N.C. State in both scoring and rebounding his senior season, Bailey was drafted 7th overall by the Jazz in 1983. He started 54 games as a rookie and averaged 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game during the 1983-84 season. Thurl’s finest campaign came in 1987-88, when he averaged 19.6 points and 6.5 rebounds in a sixth man role as Utah took Magic and the Lakers to 7 games in the second round. He was no slouch the following season either, as he averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 1988-89, also largely as a bench player.

In 1991, Bailey was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, ironically for current Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin. At the time of the trade, Bailey had reached the wrong side of 30, though he still managed to average 11.7 points and 5.7 rebounds for the Wolves in the 1991-92 campaign following the trade. After two full ho-hum years in Minnesota from 1992 through 1994 in which he averaged less than double figures in scoring, Bailey took his game overseas. He played one season in Greece and three in Italy before returning to the Jazz for the lockout-shortened 1999 season.

Utah was coming off back-to-back Finals appearances at the time, and didn’t have many minutes available for the veteran Bailey, who ended up averaging 4.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in limited action in 1999. He retired that offseason with career averages of 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
