A friend of mine was asking me if they play both American and Canadian national anthems for all NHL games. I told him they only play both anthems if a Canadian team is playing an American team and the first to be played depends on what country they are in obviously. He has only been to NHL games in Buffalo and said they always play both anthems no matter who the visiting team may be.

I guess my question is if that is true and if so, how come they play both for all games? My 1st obvious guess would be because they are so close to the US/Canadian border? I always thought they should play both anthems for all NHL games no matter the city or matchup.

When the Knox family bought the team in 1969 they said it was for hockey fans of WNY and SO Ontario. We have a lot of cross boarder activity like shopping, sporting events, concerts and other activities.

So yes, they have always played BOTH anthems no matter what teams are playing.

Thanks Boss! I think that's pretty cool they play both. I never thought to much about it but really wasn't sure if it was a league standard or what not but I like that the owner of the team is behind the decision.

Yep, I think it's cool too. They have played BOTH anthems at every game ever played here. We also have a lot of season ticket holders in So Ontario and this year the Sabres signed a contract to have their games on radio in So Ontario.

Personally, I think it's great that hockey fans in southern Ontario can either travel to Ottawa or Buffalo to see NHL hockey.

That was my next question about if you knew if there were many season ticket holders from Ontario. Wasn't sure if the border was a definite Leafs/Sens/Sabres line or not with Toronto/Ott being so close. Looks like the Sabres fans bleed more into Canada that I thought.

Well there are 500,000 Canadians just across the boarder in the Niagara region. A bit too far to travel to Toronto plus even if they did the cost and availability of the tickets is an issue.

Hey Boss - What is the new avy?

It's the new Harbor Center, It will be attached to the Arena and has two NHL hockey rinks on the fifth floor plus Hotel rooms and retail. If you Google Harbor Center Buffalo you will be impressed with it. If the Sabres are in town and the arena is booked they can get their equipment from the FNC dressing room and take a walkway to Harbor Center to practice on one of two rinks.

I watched them lift the 53,000 lb "cooling plates" to keep the ice surfaces ready. It's really impressive elo, check it out.

Whether teams other than my Bruins do it I don't know. But I do know that I enjoy Rene Rencourt's renditions of "Oh Canada" before Bruins home games against Canadian teams.

Looked at the link there, it's really impressive

I know it said that the rink only has 1800 seats but conceivably, if there was an emergency, would the Sabres consider playing in one of those rinks? I know it probably sounds dumb but at least there are a couple of rinks there

you would think the red wings would play both anthems, being so close to windsor, but they only play both when a canadian team is in town

They probably should play both U.S. & Canadian anthems at all the games. Most of the teams are in the U.S. and most of the players are from Canada. Then again, with all the players from other countries, we might have to play a lot of anthems if we go that route.

Nice! I checked it out, looks awesome. I remember attending a NCAA tourney game there years ago and there didn't seem to be much right around the arena, so that will be really cool.

I see that...
The HarborCenter will become the home of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and recently acquired Buffalo Regals youth hockey organization.[9] Canisius College, an NCAA Division I College Hockey program in Buffalo, will also make this building their home.

Will the Sabres be using it as a practice facility? I'm guessing no.

I think so, since there are so many Canadian and American players and fans at games and since the league spans both countries beyond just a franchise or two in the other.

It'd be funny if they made the arenas play the anthem of every nationality represented on both teams. Pre-game would take as long as... as long as... a Cup banner raising ceremony. :L

My understanding is that it will not be used as a day-to-day practice facility but that it will be used occasionally for practice and more frequently for game day skates.
