It's all about perception. Eovaldi's post season performance (23.1 innings, 4 earned runs, 1.54 ERA) has inflated his current market value to ridiculous heights. Boston is talking a 4 year/$68 million deal.

Look at the comparison between Eovaldi and Mike Fiers, who was recently non-tendered by Oakland.

Games started the last three seasons:
    Fiers 30, 28, 30
    Eovaldi 21, 0, 21

    Career stats:
    Fiers 4.04 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, .253 BAA
    Evaldi 4.16 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, .268 BAA

    Last season's stats:
    Fiers 30 starts, 172 IP, 12 wins, 139 K, 3.56 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, .228 BAA
    Eovaldi 21 starts, 111 IP, 6 wins, 101 K, 3.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, .245 BAA

Does anyone think that Fiers will be offered a contract anywhere near 4 years/$68 million?
Does anyone think that if Boston does indeed give Eovaldi that much money that it will just end up being one more albatross contract that they have to bear?

I wouldn't argue with the notion that Eovaldi's been a bit overrated after his postseason performance, but Eovaldi is 4.5 years younger and he's put up better peripheral stats than Fiers (FIP, xFIP, Fiers is far more home run prone). Most projections aren't out, but Steamer projects Eovaldi to be a much better pitcher in 2019.

I can officially predict the Great Apocalypse now if MLB pundits, scribes and front offices think the Nathan Eovaldi contract is the biggest news of the month. Seriously?

I’m pretty stoked to have him back, even at the reported $17M/year price tag. He’ll fit in nicely mid-rotation and from all reports was great with the clubhouse chemistry.

Have you recovered from the Corbin signing or are you still in mourning?

Fiers may be 4.5 years older but he has less innings and far less scars on his pitching arm.

Nah, I'm good. I wouldn't have wanted to go 6 years for a guy with one good season on his resume either.

Won't lie though, the Yankees' new-found financial conservatism is a bit odd.

I personally think the team that signs Fiers will get more out of him in the long run than the Nats get from Corbin or the Sox get from Eoh.

I just had a Convo wth a friend about this.

Getting Fiers and say Grandal would’ve been a more efficient use of money.

But I’m not freaked out aboht this either. Fiers on a 4 year deal would be a mess
