I recall saying that they should of replaced Moreland at 1st base with Napoli throughout the season. You guys still disagree? He's killing the tigers....

He would have been somewhat of a decent asset this season but the offense was so bad that he would have helped but that 2nd half of 2011 was something we'll never see from Napoli again. Defensively I'll take bitch any day of the day.

He's has two solo homers this series. He's not killing the tigers. Their own lack of offense and their bullpen is killing them.

I don't recall anyone disagreeing with that

I think the issue is when he was commanding 10+ million dollars a year to be a bad catcher with a bad hip

Napoli is a gamer. Seems to always play well when the stage is it's largest

Defensively Mitch is superior, but overall I'd still take Napoli in a heartbeat. Be interesting to see though what he commands on the open market.

I'm assuming its an outlier but Napoli, but defensive metrics was rated him as one of the best at 1B this year defensively

Yeah, I actually watched a few Sox games this year and his defense was more than adequate. It surprised me actually. Hadn't looked up his actual metrics though... interesting that he ranked near the top of the league. I tend to agree with you on the outlier assumption, but it's funny to think about because usually when you hear "outlier" it refers to a year of offensive stats. It's not that often you see guys career it one season with the glove.

Yep. Had he been healthy in 2012 TEX might have been stronger in signing him for 2013 (although would still not have made him a QO). Had he been healthy in 2012 and in the physicals BOS put him through ... then BOS would have signed him to the multi-year contract he wanted from TEX.

There is no reason for BOS to not offer him a QO and follow up with the same multi-year contract this offseason they offered last offseason.

If they don't make a QO or offer the original multi-year deal that sends a message everywhere else that 2011 and 2013 may be the outlier years and 2014 to be a return to 2012.

well, he ended up with a 1-year deal for 5M + incentives totaling 8M if he stayed active for 165 days with Boston. with the hip i would say that if you offered him a 2-year deal worth about 15M plus incentives worth about the same 8M a year for a 165 active days you might get him. but if Boston decides they want him back forget it

With Napoli I think its more about the years and commitment than just the money

He knew there were concerns with his hip after his physical and he decided to prove he could stay healthy as long as he didn't have to catch

Winding I am loving your quote about old guys! Let's be real, Joe Nathan is more of an outlier with old guys. Oswalt and Berkman are more of the reality of how things tend to go.

Sox could have had him in 2010 when they claimed him on waivers, but Theo couldn't work out a trade. May have put in the claim just to block another team anyway. I've wanted him on the Sox for years.

Yep. Dude's a gamer, no doubt. He's still a fan favorite here in Arlington and still hears the "Nap-o-li" chants even as a member of the Sox.
