My last trip to Las Vegas(June 2016 to July 2016), I had to get my father out of the hospital and put him into an Assisted Living Facility.

He did what he wanted to do. For the last 20 years, he has lived in Las Vegas on his own until the age of 95 and went to the casino every day to play the horses.

I knew he would not live until 2017, but this happened a lot quicker than I thought it would.

At this time, it is unknown if I will be needing to fly out to Las Vegas again. I guess I will find out tomorrow when I talk to a lot more people than tend to work on Monday than on Sunday's.

Now, I get to experience all the joys of doing wills(I am the executor) and probate in Nevada. Which could be real easy or real tough, it won't be in between, that I know.

I'm sorry for your loss. You are a lucky man to have had your dad until he was 95. It sounds like he lived his life to the fullest. I hope I can do what I love up to the point. Think about all the great times you had together. The memories are all we really have in the end. Sounds like you have some great ones. Once again I'm sorry for your loss.

WOW!! Thanks everyone. Very kind of everyone here to post these nice things.

When I was leaving Las Vegas July 9, my Dad did say to me that he was going to die the day after I left, he waited eight days. Always great to hear your parent say stuff like that.

It is still sort of shocking, but no way was I surprised. My brothers and I figured that as soon as he went into an assisted living facility he would die pretty quick. I just figured with as tough as he has been, he would keep going for a few months.

So begins the next day. Rough night thinking of all the stuff I have to do via the phone. Las Vegas being two hours earlier makes it worse. Another stupid thing, all people assume I live in Las Vegas. They just don't fathom that I do not live near my Dad. In actuality, our Father chose to live in Las Vegas, not near any of his kids.

Thankfully, there isn't much to do financially, as he had no hard assets(house, car, etc) as those had all been converted to cash prior. Soft assets(annuities) which I did not know he had, I will deal with. I have no idea if he has a life insurance policy but his bank account doesn't show making any payments for one and I have not found any paperwork saying he does. Luckily, I have had full bank account access since 1999, but I never did anything with the bank until December of 2015 when his health first took a turn for the worst.

Of course, I have never done this before so it is all a new experience for me and I won't know what I am to ask for and the way customer service is anymore, I won't be able to find humans to help me. I call companies and get into their endless phone trees, and I need to know information that I don't know, and sometimes, the phone trees just hang up on me. Pressing ZERO no longer gives me a human. Then, you get the excuse, we are experiencing a heavy call volume, your wait will be forever. Please go online and you can deal with it. Of course, you need the correct information to go on line.

His body was to be donated to science, this was started in 1999. Guess what, the school that agreed to take his body 17 years ago no longer does. Of course, people names and school names have all changed so finding contacts is hard, especially on a Sunday. Today, I call the funeral home and some place in Las Vegas that might accept his body.

Sorry to hear that HuskerinBig10.

We lost my grandmother very similarly about a month ago, she was a month shy of 95, I think. She had been living with my uncle and aunt, but then had an accident about 4 months ago and got moved to assisted living. She seemed like she was doing okay there, but took a spill (maybe had a stroke but no one ever mentioned it) because from that point on she just didn't have any mental capacity. she died shortly there after. Her husband had passed about 5 years ago and she really didn't have much will to live after that, so we all had kinda been preparing ourselves for it for awhile.

as far as the other stuff, good luck. don't be so sure about not having life insurance, it's possible he had a policy paid off and just wasn't required to make any more payments. But, i guess if you've had bank access for 17 years and he never mentioned anything, then maybe not. Seems like you should have all the needed information, what more would companies want other than like DOB, Soc#, and some info like that?
