Feeling inspired by the recent wave of sports tournaments, especially in basketball I decided to whip up something on the fly. A Sweet 16 for the original decade of recorded music. The first known musical recording and thus, the first official demo ever recorded was in 1888 when George Gouraud recorded an instrumental rendition of "The Lost Chord" by Arthur Sullivan.
Beginning in 1889, recorded music on phonograph/wax cylinders started gaining in popularity and commercial recordings became a thing. By 1900, though sheet music was still a big seller, recorded music had become a little more accepted.
This whipped up When You Were Sweet 16 [man, it would've been nice to have the original of that available] Tournament is something I threw together. 8 matchups, you vote for each one and I'll cast the tiebreaker if need be. Please wait until I've posted all 8 matches for the 1st Round and then you can reply with your votes. We'll go until Midnight for each one which means you have less than 24 hours to get those votes in. After that, we'll have the Quarterfinals and so on, each day at a time.
Also, I'll be taking suggestions for the next tournament which will be based on releases from 1901 to 1910. No more than 3 songs though so I don't get too flooded and it has to be available on YouTube since that's what I'm working with for source. I plan on having that tournament situated by this time next week.
Stand by for the matches and be sure to listen before voting.
NOTE: Almost all of these songs are scratchy as fuck, because they were recorded in the 19th Century. Try not to get too hung up on that and enjoy some examples of the early days of recorded music, the pioneers before all the other pioneers showed up.
