Does the world really need live action remakes of cartoons?

A better question might be, does the audience demand exist for live-action remakes such that the movie will make tons of money?

The remakes Aladdin, Cinderella, The Lion King, Maleficient, etc., all being hits at the box office has shown the audience demand is definitely there.

As long as live-action remakes continue to be very profitable, studios will keep making them.

This is actually potentially pretty big news with repercussions far beyond just Mulan. It may open the floodgates for the release of other top-budget movies to streaming services instead of theaters.

Sure, but the same would apply for a normal theatrical release: you pay to see it once early, or you wait a few months for the home video release.

And it turns out that the deal is much better than a usual time-limited rental, per Insider and ScreenRant:

If you purchase live-action Mulan for $29.99 on Disney Plus, it won't be a one-time rental. Once purchased, Disney+ subscribers will have continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service, a Disney Plus representative confirmed to Insider.

A representative for Disney has confirmed that Disney+ subscribers who buy Mulan for $29.99 will have access to the film as long as they subscribe to the service, and that it is not just a one-time rental fee.

So it's good for families that are going to stay subscribed to Disney+ long-term.

There are the usual advantages for the consumer over a normal theatrical release (repeated viewing in the comfort of the home; not being forced to deal with unpleasant audience members like crying babies or strangers cramming into your personal space, etc.).

And this will still be considerably cheaper than taking a family of 4 to the theater, particularly when accounting for transportation and concessions.
