MoviePass will start to surge prices for popular movies in July

“At certain times for certain films — on opening weekend — there could be an additional charge for films,” Lowe said. The added fee will start at two dollars, but Lowe did not specify how high the pricing can go. Fortunately, MoviePass users who pay for the annual subscription won’t have to worry about surge pricing, as it will only apply to users who are on a month-to-month subscription.

Business Insider reports that the company will also introduce the option to let subscribers get tickets for friends who aren’t on the service for around the retail price of another ticket. MoviePass will also soon allow users to pay extra to see movies in IMAX or 3D, but premium movie pricing won’t be combinable with the adding a friend option.

Pass. I usually catch a Friday morning show for $5 dollars on my Fridays off. I maybe do that about once a month.

I guess if you aren't able to catch weekday showings before noon, this might be a good deal for you.

MoviePass is dead. It was great while it lasted. Good things came from it. There are three like them. AMC has the best one. I imagine Regal will come out with one soon. If they don't, AMC will get their business. I'll drive five more miles to an AMC since they have a movie pass.

Thanks, MoviePass. You didn't survive but you did make a change to the industry for the better.

This business model of taking in less money than you are putting out didn't work?

Dear MoviePass Member,

On August 15, 2018, we will hit the one-year anniversary of MoviePass’ revolutionary price point of $9.95 a month. We’ve experienced tremendous growth, and we know that at times, the frequent changes to our service have been frustrating to you. But through it all, one thing is clear: we’ve gotten people excited about going to the movies again.

Over the last year, we have tried different things and we’ve discovered what our members love about our service — the low price point and the ability to go to more than 91 percent of theaters nationwide. We’ve also learned what people don’t like about the service — features including Peak Pricing and Ticket Verification.

So now, with almost a full year of learnings under our belt, we’re introducing a new pricing plan that retains the features you love the most and removes the ones you don’t. Most importantly, this new plan will ensure that we can run a sustainable business and continue providing you with an amazing deal to go see movies in theaters.

Here are the details:

  • Under our new plan, MoviePass members will be able to see up to three standard movies a month for $9.95, and be given up to a $5.00discount to any additional movie tickets purchased. Today, 85 percent of MoviePass members go to three movies or less per month, so these changes cater to the majority of our movie-going community.
  • The new plan will include many major studio first-run films, however there will be some exceptions (note that theaters with e-ticketing will include all movies and showtimes with no restrictions).
  • We will be suspending Peak Pricing and Ticket Verification requirements for all members in the new plan described above.
  • Over the coming days, MoviePass members with a monthly subscription renewing on or after August 15th will be given the option in the MoviePass app to transition to the new plan. Quarterly and annual subscribers will not be impacted until their renewal date.
The truth is, disruption and innovation require staying flexible and having an open mind. We genuinely strive to offer you a service that is a great deal, and we believe that the new plan we’re introducing will be attractive to the majority of our members.

It’s been an exciting journey so far, and MoviePass is here to stay. Your endless support, understanding and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Mitch Lowe

This is how MoviePass should have been run since they started the $9.95 service. Would they have over three million users? Probably. I have read a lot of comments saying they wouldn't join because they believe it wouldn't last. Those skeptics may have joined if it was this plan.

I'm going to our AMC theatre tomorrow to see if I like the seating. I'm hoping the wheelchair seating isn't too close to the screen. That shit fucking sucks. If it's all good, I'll be joining AMC's A-list. It is the best deal. Even if MoviePass survives.

A List is the far better deal if you are someone who typically pays for 2 movies a month.

The only downside is you are limited to AMC

I tried it, but still didn't end up going to many movies. Then one day (a Sunday, early evening, so not prime) I tried checking into a movie, and it didn't work. Cancelled immediately after.

That's sad.

"MoviePass Actively Tried to Stop Users from Seeing Movies, FTC Alleges":

----

First, according to an FTC press release announcing the complaint, MoviePass invalidated users' passwords and claimed, falsely, that it had detected fraud related to their accounts. And we're talking about a lot of customers. According to the complaint, MoviePass did this to 75,000 users — many of whom where then locked out of their accounts as "MoviePass's password reset process often failed."

The FTC notes that MoviePass's then CEO Mitchell Lowe, along with the CEO of MoviePass's parent company, "knew of, ordered, or helped execute the password disruption program."

Second, MoviePass allegedly launched a "ticket verification program" that didn't work correctly, and, as a result, "blocked thousands of subscribers from using the service."

And, perhaps most outrageously, "MoviePass's operators used 'trip wires' that blocked certain groups of users—typically those who viewed more than three movies per month—from utilizing the service after they collectively hit certain thresholds based on their monthly cost to the company."

They are still in operation?
