Another day older and deeper in debt.

I gave my 16 year old a calculation to figure out how much snow I shoveled. He is sick.

I told him the driveway is 36feet by 36feet

The depth of the snow was 5 inches

And to assume the snow weighed 15 pounds per cubic foot.

What Tennessee Ernie Ford's song does not mention, is how much sweat I have on my over heating body.

We just got about an .5 - 1 inch of powder here, but it still needs to be cleaned off because the forecast says we don't see above freezing until Christmas day.

My driveway is currently undergoing solar melt and should be bone dry for the deep freeze hitting us tonight and through all next week.

I'm up here in Omaha now and my 15 year old daughter is simply amazed how dirty winter can be. I've never brought her up here in the winter before.

We normally get one or two snows in Tn but we just figure God put it there, he can take it away.

edit: ...and He does, usually be 10 or so.

Ouch. I feel your pain. I shovel my driveway and a widow's driveway that is a neighbor. Think of the exercise we get though.

Fun day today. I come in from shoveling, what does my wife say?

"I think there is a natural gas leak"

I go in the basement, and oh yeah, there is a natural gas leak. Odor is very strong. Mascaptan or something is the odor.

I call power company and furnace company. Power company is free, furnace company cost me $158 per hour. Power company calls it an emergency. What I learn, an emergency puts me at the top of the list and I get ALL UTILITIES AT MY HOUSE.

First power company guy shows up and has his meter. Then the furnace company guy shows up.

I had turned off all natural gas to basement furnace, water heater, and dryer. The smell was still in the basement.

The furnace guy finds nothing wrong, $338.12 later he is gone. But he was worth the piece of mind. In 2013, I had a new water heater installed and we had bought a new dryer so it was possible a new connection was bad. It was also possible the furnace could have a crack. I do not mess with electricity and natural gas, I pay people to do that. I will mess with plumbing any day of the week.

I pay off the furnace guy and he leaves.

The power company meter is registering low numbers. When there is an LEL, it means Low Explosive Limit. Even though they are saying the word explosive that is good. My house is all LEL but it is in the 4.2 range in the basement by where the meter is on the outside of the house. You can start smelling mascaptan or whatever at 2.0 he tells me.

I give the power company guy a full tour of all gas devices in my house, and everything is OK except for the wall near the outside meter. Now, I had always smelled natural gas by the meter, and I had had a power company guy come out and spray soap on it before and he gave it the OKAY. I just shook my head and decided how do I fight it if I don't know anything about it.

This new power company guy actually listened to me, and he DUG around the pipe to my meter. Well, by golly, there was a crack in the riser going to the meter. So yes, I HAD been smelling natural gas outside by the meter all this time.

He does his tests and all of a sudden the meter gets a RED light and LEL changes from LEL to GAS. Now when the meter changes from LEL to GAS, then you should worry. It is actually flammable and explosive. Oh joy.

The good news, I get more power company people showing up, along with all other utilities. I have a patch on my gas pipe and I am being scheduled for a major dig and fix.

There is NO SMELL in our basement now.

Plus, while waiting for all of this to go on, I shovel the 70 foot stretch of driveway to the street. So, I shoveled more snow.

I don't know what type of meter your gas guy was using, but it sounds like a meter for idiots. LEL is measured in percentage, once the predetermined safe limit is met, they typically sound off an alarm tone.

I'm glad your potentially dangerous situation has been taken care of.

I had a snowblower, gave it away to my neighbor's preacher, but I prefer the shovel still. I actually look forward to the exercise. The point is coming though. I am WELL past 50.

To NE1tm, don't blame the power company person, my translation of the information could have been suspect.

No problem HB10......

Where I work we super heat natural gas to produce 99.9% hydrogen.
I'd like to know who the crazy mf'er was, that had the balls enough to super heat natural gas to 1500+ F to crack the hydrogen molecules from the carbon molecule. Crazy bastard anywho....

Merry Christmas to you.

Typed it for WTF. I learned stuff, maybe someone else can learn from what I typed.

Hopefully, Suh, you will not have to go through a natural gas scare with your wife and kids during the winter.
